A Look at Some of the Popular Music Streaming Services

Music Streaming

For most of us, streaming the genre of music we want from an online service is the way to go. Whether we’re in the office, at home or in the car, access to millions of songs is always just a click away. Let’s take a look at some of the more popular music streaming services available.

Pandora

Because of how it chooses the music you want to hear, Pandora is a unique streaming service. Powered by the Music Genome Project, Pandora analyzes between 150 and 450 attributes, depending on the genre of music, to classify each song. Interestingly, the analysis is performed by a musician in a process that takes 20 to 30 minutes. At least 10% of the songs are analyzed by more than one musician to maintain statistical accuracy.

Music Streaming

What does this mean to the listener? If you choose a song you like, such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, Pandora will play that song, then follow it with something very similar. Using this example, Pandora, when used via its website with a computer, offers a list of features of the song. They are “Grunge recording qualities, Repetitive melodic phrasing, Extensive vamping, Minor key tonality and A vocal-centric aesthetic.” Similar songs would include “My Hero” by Foo Fighters, “Machinehead” by Bush and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Green Day. You can create your own station based on an artist or genre of music. It’s a great way to get your Synth Pop fix when you’re feeling retro!

There are dedicated iOS and Android apps for Pandora, with integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Many aftermarket source units include a Pandora application built into the radio interface to let you give a thumbs-up to the songs you like.

Pandora was purchased by SiriusXM in February 2019 for $3.5 million. It’s worth noting that Pandora is not available in Canada.

Spotify

It is said that Spotify is a great streaming service for people who know what they want to hear. In contrast, Pandora might be a better source for finding new music. Spotify lets you search by song title, artist, album or genre. Listeners can create and share playlists of their favorite songs. According to Wikipedia, Spotify offers access to 50 million songs and as of the summer of 2019, has 232 million active users. Dedicated applications are available for your computer (Windows, Macintosh or Linux), as well as PlayStation, Xbox and Internet-connected speakers like Sonos, Alexa and Google home.

Music Streaming

Spotify has iOS and Android apps that are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Like Pandora, many aftermarket radios include dedicated Spotify apps.

Tidal

Known best for its amazing sound quality, Tidal offers two levels of service: Tidal Premium, which uses lossy files, and Tidal Hi-Fi, which features FLAC-format CD-quality streams at 44.1 kHz sampling rates and 16 bits of resolution. Bandwidth reduction comes from FLAC compression that only reduces file size and not sound quality. Tidal claims to offer more than 60 million tracks and 240,000 videos.

Music Streaming

Another characteristic that makes Tidal unique is access to exclusive music, including “first access” to releases from artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Kanye West and Jay Z. Many artists are shareholders and co-owners in the company.

Of course, Tidal apps exist for iOS and Android mobile devices. CarPlay and Android Auto both support Tidal.

Qobuz

After a rocky start, Qobuz claims to be the first music streaming service that offers 24-bit Hi-Res files. Users have their choice of Qobuz Premium with MP3-quality 320 kbps streaming, Qobuz Hi-Fi with CD-quality FLAC files at 44.1 kHz/16 bit or Qobuz Studio with Hi-Res FLAC at up to 192 kHz and 24-bit resolution. Qobuz claims to offer access to 40 million songs. Unlike the other services we have listed, there is no free trial for Qobuz. If you’re serious about the quality of your music, then it’s worth checking out Qobuz.

Music Streaming

Explore New Music with Streaming Services

There are dozens more popular streaming services like Apple Music, Google Play Music, Amazon Music and iHeartRadio. All of these have mobile apps that are supported by the smartphone integration solutions CarPlay and Android Auto. If you have questions about how to enjoy a streaming service in your car, or how to upgrade your mobile audio system to get the most out of the music you love, drop by your local specialist mobile enhancement retailer today. They would be happy to help!

Product Spotlight: Compustar PRO T13 Remote Kit

Compustar PRO T13

Car or truck owners looking for a remote start solution with the most features and longest range will want to check out the new PRO T13 remote kit from Compustar. Considered the new benchmark for performance, the T13 combines an amazing 3 miles of range with a color LCD screen and the new Proximity Unlock feature. If that isn’t enough, the T13 includes a built-in rechargeable battery, water-resistant case and reliability that has made Compustar the quality leader in the car starter industry.

Compustar PRO T13 Design and Features

The first thing you’ll notice is a bright color LCD screen that includes graphics that show when your vehicle is locked, unlocked or remote started. You can also see the voltage of the vehicle battery as well as the interior temperature. Of course, because it features 2-way communication, you’ll always know if the commands you’ve sent have been received and executed at the vehicle. Lastly, the screen shows the remote’s battery level and whether audible or vibration alerts are active.

Though the remote only has three buttons, the intuitive design allows you to access a variety of secondary options like trunk release, car finder and auxiliary outputs. In all, more than 50 commands and setting options are available to give you complete, personalized control over your vehicle. You can even change the language from English to Spanish or French.

Compustar PRO T13A built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery powers the T13. A micro-USB connection on the top of the remote makes charging easy. You can recharge the remote using a powered USB port in your vehicle while you drive. The battery lasts about 45 days on a full charge with systems that don’t include security features.

Finally, the T13 remote is waterproof and is built with reinforced high-strength materials to withstand the abuse that comes with being sat on or occasionally dropped in a puddle or snowbank. Compustar backs all PRO-Series remotes with a three-year warranty.

Proximity Unlock Feature

A new and unique capability of the PRO T13 is the Proximity Unlock feature. If you’re leaving a store with your arms full of groceries or supplies, the vehicle will unlock automatically when you are within 3 to 6 feet of the Compustar antenna on the windshield. The antenna’s centralized placement allows the system to work just as efficiently from the vehicle’s passenger side. Fumbling with keys in your hands while you carry the kids or digging at the bottom of your purse will be an afterthought.

You can disable the Proximity Unlock feature with just a few quick button-presses on the remote if you are working nearby and want to keep your vehicle locked.

Industry-Leading Range Performance

If you’ve ever tried to use a remote start system from inside a large building, then you’ll know how important it is to have as much range as possible. The PRO T13 remote uses spread-spectrum technology to provide up 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) of range. This incredible transmitting power means that you’re more likely to be able to start your car from the depths of a warehouse, office tower or apartment than when using a remote that only offers 1 mile of range.

Companion Remote and Drone Telematics Included

Compustar PRO T13Known formally as the RFX-P2WT13-SF (in the United States), the kit includes the amazing color LCD PRO T13 remote, a one-button long-range PRO R5 remote, a Drone X1-LTE interface, an antenna and all the cables your installer will require to complete a new installation or upgrade an existing one.

This PRO R5 remote offers up to 2 miles (3.2 km) of range to make it easy for someone else in your home or for a co-worker to use your vehicle. The remote also features the same easy-to-charge lithium-ion battery as the T13. Even though it has the most intuitive interface available, the Proximity Unlock feature makes it easy to get into your car or truck without having to search for the keys.

If you’re shopping in the United States, then your PRO T13 remote system will include one of the Drone X1-LTE telematics interfaces. When combined with an app on your smartphone, Drone lets you control and monitor your vehicle from anywhere you have cellular data access. You could be on the other side of the city or vacationing in another state – you’ll still be able to monitor the vehicle. Your local authorized Drone retailer can help you choose the right Drone service plan for your needs.

Upgrade Your Vehicle with Compustar Convenience Today

Whether you’re shopping for a new remote car starter or already have a Compustar, Arctic Start, RTX or iDatastart system in your vehicle, your local authorized Compustar PRO retailer can get you set up with the new PRO T13 remote system today! Product Spotlight: Compustar PRO R5 Remote Start

Compustar R5Compustar, the world-leader in high-performance remote start and security systems, recently introduced the new PRO R5 remote. This one-button remote boasts up to 2 miles of range and includes a proximity unlocking feature that makes it easier than ever to use. If convenience and reliability are at the top of your vehicle convenience upgrade shopping list, then you’re looking at the perfect solution.

Long-Range RF Performance Improves Connectivity

The PRO R5 remote uses spread-spectrum technology to deliver up to 2 miles of range. If you live in an apartment or work in a large store, this impressive transmitting power helps ensure that you can remote start your vehicle a few minutes before it’s time to leave.

The R5 includes four LED-illuminated pictographic icons that let you know when the lock, unlock and remote start commands have been received and executed. Tapping the button once will send the lock command. Tapping the button twice sends the unlock command. Pressing and holding the button for about three seconds initiates the remote start sequence. If the vehicle has already been remote-started, you can shut it down by pressing and holding the button for three seconds.

Another cool feature of the PRO R5 is its ability to alert the owner if the security system is triggered. This type of notification is a new feature for a one-button remote.

Compustar R5Proximity Unlocking Adds Convenience

The new PRO R5, just like its big brother, the PRO T13, includes a feature called proximity unlocking. When you are within 3 to 6 feet of the Compustar antenna on the windshield of your vehicle, the system will automatically unlock the doors. If you’re carrying groceries, tools or perhaps a child, not having to dig through your pockets or purse to unlock the vehicle is incredibly handy. Once unlocked, pull the door handle to open the door, and you can load everything or everyone into the vehicle.

Compustar has included a customization option in the R5 programming to let you turn off the proximity feature remotely. You can also toggle silent arming/disarming through the same configuration process. Finally, you can turn the remote off completely to save the battery if you are going on vacation or will be away from the vehicle for an extended period of time.

Compustar R5Industry Reference Reliability

Compustar remote start and security systems are widely recognized as the benchmark for performance and reliability in the mobile enhancement industry. The R5 features the same robust construction and water-resistant design that have earned the company its much-lauded reputation. If you’re prone to dropping your keys when exiting your vehicle, this remote should be able to handle the abuse. Compustar backs their PRO-Series remotes with a three-year warranty.

The PRO R5 remote is powered by a lithium-ion battery, so you don’t have to worry about buying coin cells. A micro-USB port makes it as easy to recharge the remote as it is to charge a smartphone. You can even use a powered USB port in your vehicle to top up the battery on the way to or home from work.

Drone Telematics Ensures Unlimited Connectivity

When you purchase the RF-P2WR5-SF kit, you will get a pair of the PRO R5 remote controls and one of the Drone X1-LTE interfaces. When connected to your remote starter or security system, Drone allows you to control your vehicle from an app on your smartphone. All you have to do is tap an icon on your phone and you can lock, unlock or remote start your vehicle from anywhere you have access to an internet connection. You can choose from several Drone service plans that include GPS-based alerts to further enhance your ability to monitor your vehicle.

Compustar Is the Leader in Remote Start Technology

If you want to upgrade an existing Compustar, RTX, Arctic Start or iDatastart system, or are shopping for a new solution for your vehicle, drop by your local Compustar dealer and ask about the new PRO R5 remotes. You can find a dealer using the Compustar website. For updates on the latest product and feature introductions from Compustar, visit their Facebook and Instagram pages and their YouTube channel.

Automotive Upgrades That Help Seniors Drive Safely

Senior Driving Safety

A variety of technologies are available to help our seniors drive safely. It’s been shown repeatedly that independent mobility improves the wellbeing of those of us lucky enough to have retired after a long career. A backup camera, parking sensors, lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring systems are great ways to help everyone on the road reach their destination without an accident or a close call. Let’s look at how each of these technologies works.

Backup Cameras for Safer Maneuvering

It’s been proven that having a backup camera on your vehicle can dramatically reduce the chances of accidents or injuries when parking or maneuvering. These cameras mount on or near a license plate, or they can be integrated into a tailgate handle on a pickup truck or third brake light on an SUV. The camera provides an unobstructed view of the area behind the vehicle.

Depending on the make and model of car, truck or SUV you drive, the image from the backup camera can be displayed on the factory-installed infotainment system screen, on a replacement rearview mirror with an integrated display or on a compact stand-alone display. The camera image appears automatically when reverse is selected in the transmission.

Senior Driving Safety
The Momento R1 replacement rearview mirror includes a 4.3-inch auto-dimming display that can show everything behind the vehicle when backing up. A second video input can be integrated into a forward-facing camera to make parking easier and more accurate.

Parking Sensors See the Unseen

A parking sensor system incorporates a series of ultrasonic transceivers, usually mounted in the rear bumper of your car or truck. When you are backing up, the sensors emit a radio frequency signal and look for any reflections. Even an item as small as a parking signpost can be detected by the system.

When the sensors detect an object, an audible alert is provided to the vehicle operator, usually in the form of a series of beeps. The frequency of the beeps increases as the vehicle gets closer and closer to the object. Finally, at a distance of about 1 foot, the beeps turn to a solid tone to let the driver know he or she should stop the vehicle.

A key benefit of a parking sensor system over a backup camera is that it’s an active technology: You don’t need to remember to use it, and it alerts you when you need to react.

Senior Driving Safety
The ParkAlert system from Echomaster includes four ultrasonic sensors and a small display that will let you know when you are approaching an object. The system works with objects as far as 2.5 feet away from the vehicle.

Lane Departure Warning Systems Keep You On The Straight and Narrow

With advances in computer image processing, we now have access to reasonably priced lane departure warning systems. These systems use a camera mounted high on the windshield to watch the lane markings on the road as you drive. If you veer toward the curb or the lines, an audible warning is provided.

A system called the MDAS-9 not only lets drivers know when they are moving out of their lane, the camera system can alert the driver to impending accidents with pedestrians or cyclists approaching from the side. A small display module mounted on the dash provides a visual indication of the potential accident.

Senior Driving Safety
The Movon MDAS-9 is an Advanced Driver Assistance System that provides lane departure warnings, forward collision warnings and pedestrian collision warnings and includes a two-channel dashcam.

Blind Spot Monitoring Systems

If someone is driving alongside your car or truck but they aren’t visible in your peripheral vision or your side mirrors, they are said to be driving in your blind spot. Two types of blind-spot monitoring systems are available to alert drivers to the presence of vehicles in their blind spots. A sensor-based system such as the USA Spec BSM 200 includes a pair of LED indicators that are mounted in the vehicle and a set of ultrasonic sensors that are mounted behind the rear bumper cover. If someone is in your blind spot, the indicators will illuminate. If you put on your turn signal while someone is beside you, the system flashes the indicators and provides an audible warning so that you won’t change lanes and cause an accident.

Senior Driving Safety
The BSM 200 from USA Spec lets you know when another vehicle is in your blind spot. The system works with cars and SUVs with plastic rear bumper covers.

Another blind spot solution is a camera-based system. Compact cameras mounted on the side of the vehicle, typically in or under the side mirrors, show an image on a screen when you activate your turn signal. Many of these systems can be integrated into a factory-installed infotainment system screen for a seamless and tidy look.

Seniors Can Drive More Safely with Advanced Automotive Technology

If you or a family member could use a co-pilot on the next road trip, drop by your local specialist mobile enhancement retailer and ask about adding one of the driving safety systems we’ve talked about in this article. They would be happy to explain how the system works and provide you with a detailed quote to integrate the safety solution into your vehicle.

Popular Accessories and Upgrades for Ram Trucks

Ram Accessories

Whether you own a brand-new Ram Rebel or a classic Dodge 1500 pickup, your local mobile enhancement specialist carries a variety of accessories and upgrades that can improve the functionality of your vehicle and your enjoyment of it. If you love music, a speaker or subwoofer upgrade can transform your listening experience. If you use your truck for work, a toolbox or bed cover could be right up your alley. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular upgrades that are available.

Ram Pickup Truck Stereo Upgrades

If you have an older Dodge or Ram truck, upgrading the radio with something more modern can open up a whole new world of entertainment options. For those with the 1.5-DIN radio, up until now, adding multimedia was nearly impossible. The new “floating” display radio solutions from Alpine and Sony have changed this. The Alpine iLX-F309 and Sony XAV-AX8000 (shipping around December 2019) feature a single-DIN radio chassis and a huge 9-inch touchscreen display that mounts in front of the dash. These radios include Bluetooth calling and audio streaming, support for MP3, WMA, AAC and FLAC digital audio files from a USB stick and, most importantly, include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

No matter what trim level of truck you own, upgrading the speakers or adding a subwoofer will make a huge difference in the way your music sounds. Better speakers offer improved clarity, thanks to a reduction in distortion. Typically, they will also play a lot louder when combined with an upgraded amplifier.

Adding a subwoofer system to any truck is perhaps the most dramatic improvement you can make. Having an amplifier and speaker dedicated to producing bass not only allows you to hear more low-frequency information from your music, but it also alleviates the need for your smaller speakers to try to reproduce those power-hungry frequencies. In short, everything about your stereo will sound better with a subwoofer.

Ram Accessories
MTI Acoustics in College Station, Texas, offers beautifully crafted subwoofer enclosures for Ram trucks.

Safety and Collision Avoidance Systems

Your local mobile enhancement retailer offers a variety of backup cameras and collision avoidance systems for Ram trucks. A backup camera is one of the best upgrades you can make to a pickup truck. Being able to see what’s hiding behind that tailgate can prevent accidents and injury. Camera options include solutions that mount to the license plate or that are integrated into a new tailgate handle.

Ram Accessories
The RAM CAM from NAV-TV replaces the tailgate handle on 2009 and newer Ram trucks to provide a clear view of everything behind the vehicle.

Parking sensors are another great upgrade for pickup trucks. These small sensors mount in the front and/or rear bumper to detect and warn the driver as you approach an object. The system will begin beeping once you are a few feet away from a wall, a post or parked vehicle. Once you are within 12 inches, the beeping becomes a solid tone to let you know it’s time to stop.

Remote Starters and Security Systems

Most people think that remote starters are only for people who live in areas that get cold. The reality is, having a remote starter in Florida, Texas, Arizona, Georgia or California is a great way to let the air conditioning system start cooling the vehicle before it’s time to leave. Whether you are worried about heat or cold, a high-quality remote starter is a great way to make your vehicle more comfortable.

Your local specialist mobile enhancement retailer can help you choose a control option that provides the range you need to ensure your vehicle can be started long before it’s time to leave.

Ram Accessories
The new Compustar T12 remote package includes a water-resistant two-way remote control that provides up to 3 miles of range. The RFX-P2WT12-SS also includes a DroneMobile X1-LTE smartphone interface that works with an application on your smartphone to provide an effectively unlimited range.

If you are worried about someone stealing a cool set of wheels, most remote starters can be upgraded to include security functions. Adding a tilt/motion sensor and shock sensor will sound an alert if someone jacks up your vehicle to steal your wheels.

Ram Running Boards and Bed Covers

Functionality and styling upgrades are very popular with truck owners. A set of side-steps or running boards is a welcome addition on a truck with big wheels or a lift kit. For a truly elegant solution, motorized running boards like the PowerStep from Amp Research make it easy to get in and out when a door is open, then fold up tight against the rocker panel when the doors are closed to maintain ground clearance and aerodynamics.

Ram Accessories
Here’s the Amp Research PowerStep in its closed position. You have maximum ground clearance and optimized aerodynamics while driving. When you stop and open a door, the step folds down instantly to make getting in and out of the vehicle safe and easy.

If you carry tools or personal belongings in the bed of your truck, adding a tonneau cover is simple and effective protection. A soft roll-up or folding cover is an inexpensive way to conceal what’s in the bed. A hard cover upgrades your protection by making it difficult to access the contents. Both hard and soft covers roll or fold quickly to provide complete access to the bed to load and unload large items.

Lighting Upgrades

If you find you spend a lot of time driving after the sun sets or you take your Ram or Dodge off-road, a lighting upgrade might be a great idea. LED and HID bulb upgrades for the factory headlights can more than double the amount of light produced to help you see farther and be safer. A set of auxiliary lights in the form of LED light cubes or a light bar can light up a trail or road to ensure you can see everything in front of you.

Ram Accessories
LED headlight upgrades are available for projector- and reflector-style light housings. Make sure you get the right solution for your headlight type to ensure you don’t blind oncoming drivers.

Window Tint and Paint Protection Film

Another great upgrade that can improve the comfort and safety of your Ram or Dodge truck is window tint. Adding tint to the windows blocks 99% of the UV rays from the sun to protect your skin and reduce damage to the fabric, leather and vinyl in your truck. Choosing a high-quality ceramic film can cut the amount of heat that enters the truck by more than two-thirds to keep it cool on a hot summer day.

Ram Accessories

Paint protection film is an incredibly durable transparent urethane coating that is applied directly over the paint on your truck. Also called clear bra or Heli Tape, paint protection film is designed to absorb impacts from sand, gravel, stones and small rocks to prevent chips and scratches. The film can be applied to front bumpers, the hood, fenders, mirror covers, door handle cups, rocker panels and the perimeter of the truck bed and the tailgate to keep your investment looking like new.

Upgrade Your Ram or Dodge Pickup Truck Today!

Whether you need an old blown speaker replaced, want a studio-quality sound system installed or are shopping for truck accessories, drop by your local specialist mobile enhancement retailer today to find out how you can improve your Ram truck.
