Two Stories about how the Drone Smartphone System Saved the Day

Drone Smartphone

While the convenience of being able to remote start your car from your smartphone with the Drone system is obvious, this easy-to-use system has been able to get clients out of a jam on more than one occasion. Let’s take a look at two examples where DroneMobile users have used their telematics systems when they got into a bind.

Keys and Phone Locked in Your Car?

Our friend Bob was on his way to work when he realized his truck was almost out of gas. As is normal on most mornings, he didn’t leave much extra time for stops on his way to the office. Not wanting to run out of fuel, he pulled into a Shell station to fill up his truck. In a rush to get the truck fueled and back on the road, he managed to lock his keys, phone and wallet in the vehicle.

In cases like this, there are usually two options. First, call someone at home to bring an extra set of keys. Option two is to call a tow truck in hopes that the driver can unlock the doors with a lockout kit. As luck would have it for poor coffee-deprived Bob, nobody was home.

Thankfully, he’d equipped his truck with a remote car starter that includes a Drone smartphone interface. He asked a fellow patron at the gas station if they would let him download the DroneMobile app so that he could unlock his vehicle. With the app installed in a few seconds, he entered his username and password to log in, then sent an unlock command to the truck. The doors were open three seconds later. After uninstalling the app on the phone, he bought his helpful friend a coffee for their trouble.

Log in to Drone on a Computer

Using another phone with the DroneMobile App was a great idea. Given the speed of most cellular data connections, it took less then two minutes to complete the entire process. Bob could have logged into the www.dronemobile.com website using the smartphone’s web browser and sent the unlock command. Another option would have been to call a family member and have them unlock the vehicle from their phone, or have them log in on the website and send the unlock command. With Drone on-board, there’s a lot of options to get out of a headache scenario like this.

Drone Smartphone
Drone users have access to all the remote-control commands by logging into the DroneMobile website.

You Won’t Get Lost in a Big City

It seems inevitable that even when we think we know where we’re going, circumstances lead to us getting lost. We recently heard of a case where a friend’s wife had to go into Buffalo for a meeting. They live just outside of Niagara Falls, so this wasn’t a long trip. Kelly did the best she could, having looked up her destination on Google, but after a few detours caused by construction and one-way streets, she quickly found herself somewhere she didn’t recognize. She didn’t have a navigation system in her car and didn’t want to risk getting a ticket by using her phone. She called her husband using her Bluetooth system for help.

The trick to getting un-lost is to know where you are. Her husband logged into the Drone website and used the GPS-based vehicle locating function to find her location. As it turned out, Kelly was just a few blocks from where she wanted to go. Her husband gave her directions to the parking lot she was looking for, and she made it to her meeting right on time.

Add the Convenience of Drone to Your Car or Truck Today

These stories are just two examples of how the features of Drone extend well beyond remote starting your vehicle on a cold winter morning. If you’re interested in adding a remote car starter with the Drone telematics system to your vehicle, drop by your local authorized Firstech retailer. You can find one using the dealer locator on their website. For more information about Drone, be sure to follow them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. You can learn more about the amazing features of the Drone system with the videos on their YouTube channel.

Popular Upgrades for Audi Vehicles

Audi Upgrades

If you drive an Audi car or SUV, your local specialty mobile enhancement retailer offers a variety of entertainment and safety upgrades. Whether you want to update the technology in an older vehicle, add heated seats to make a cold morning more comfortable or improve the sound system so your music sounds like you are at a concert instead of listening to a clock radio, your local specialty mobile enhancement retailer can help. Let’s look at a few popular upgrades common to Ingolstadt’s finest cars.

Audi Audio and Infotainment Upgrades

If you have an older Audi that will accept an aftermarket radio, upgrading to a solution that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is a wise investment, especially if you spend a lot of time in your car. These voice recognition technologies let you ask your smartphone to send text messages, make phone calls or dial phone numbers without you having to take your eyes off the road. You can choose the song, artist or genre of music stored on your phone or pick from streaming services like Pandora, Tidal, Google Play Music or iHeartRadio to entertain you on the way to work.

Audi Upgrades
Multimedia source units like the Sony XAV-AX7000 offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration to make communicating while driving safer.

Detailed and turn-by-turn navigation directions are available to the address or business of your asking. Navigation solutions like Waze and Google Maps work with Android and iOS-powered smartphones to ensure that real-time traffic information is used to optimize your route.

Audi Upgrades
Compact multichannel amplifiers like the UP 7DSP from Match allow mobile enhancement retailers to upgrade the speakers in your vehicle and tune the system to deliver amazing clarity and realism.

If you have a newer Audi, your local specialty mobile enhancement retailer can upgrade the factory-installed sound system to deliver reduced distortion, more output and, most importantly, dramatically better bass response.

Remote Car Starters and Convenience Accessories

Whether you live in the cold North or the balmy South, nobody wants to get into a car or truck that’s freezing cold or swelteringly hot. A remote car starter is a perfect solution in both cases. With the press of a button on a long-range remote or a quick tap on the screen of a smartphone application, the engine in your vehicle will start, and the climate control system can start making the vehicle more comfortable.

Audi Upgrades
If you’re in the market for a remote car starter with the most range possible, check out the T12 from Compustar. With enough signal to cover up to 3 miles of range, no hand-held remote even comes close.

You may want to consider adding an alarm system to your starter to protect a nice set of wheels or to provide a warning if the car is jacked up. We mentioned smartphone control already. Did you know you can use an app on your phone to control your remote starter? These telematics systems also offer the ability to locate your vehicle and display that information on Google Maps, right on your phone. If you share the vehicle with family members or coworkers, you can check its location whenever you want.

Security and Accident-Avoidance Solutions

If your Audi didn’t come with a backup camera, adding one isn’t a problem. There are hundreds of camera options, and depending on your vehicle, we can integrate the camera with the factory color display in the dash, an aftermarket radio or a replacement rearview mirror with an integrated color LCD screen.

Audi Upgrades
Many premium backup camera interfaces can display dynamic parking lines that move based on the angle of your steering wheel. This information makes it easier to park your car safely.

Another popular upgrade is parking sensors. These work like a backup camera, but warn you automatically when you are approaching an object.

Other safety options include blind-spot warning systems that use ultrasonic or radar sensors to let you know when a car, truck or motorcycle is in an adjacent lane. Many of these systems switch to a cross-traffic alert mode to provide warnings about oncoming vehicles when you’re backing out of a parking spot.

Rear-Seat Entertainment Systems

If you take road trips with your family, adding an overhead or replacement headrest entertainment system can turn that dreaded “Are we there yet?” into near silence for many hours. These video systems include wireless headphones that let your rear-seat passengers watch their programming in peace. Many systems can play DVDs or video files from a USB memory stick. Some even have built-in gaming systems to help pass the time.

Lighting Upgrades

Audi Upgrades
LED headlight upgrades are designed specifically for reflector and projector-style lighting assemblies. Make sure you choose the right solution for your application.

If the headlights on your Audi just aren’t cutting it, many options are available to enhance what you can see once the sun sets. HID and LED headlight upgrades are very popular with older Audi vehicles that came with incandescent lighting systems. Many retailers can source and install replacement headlight assemblies if yours are looking a little ragged or faded.

Window Tint and Paint Protection Film

Audi Upgrades
Window tint can dramatically reduce glare so you can see better.

People choose to have the windows of their cars and trucks tinted to enhance the appearance of the vehicle, to improve its security or to make it more comfortable. A rich, dark tint can make a dramatic change to the way a car looks. If you are concerned about unscrupulous folk peering in your windows, window tint can help conceal the contents of your vehicle. Finally, choosing a ceramic or multilayer heat-rejecting tint film reduces the amount of IR heat energy from the sun that can enter your vehicle. These films are available in almost transparent shades for use on windshields, where legal, to block even more heat.

If you care about how your Audi looks, then you may want to inquire about paint protection film. This transparent film can be applied to any smooth surface to prevent impacts from rocks, gravel, sand or salt from scratching or chipping the paint. Originally developed to protect the leading edge of helicopter blades from damage during the Vietnam War, the urethane layer is amazingly durable yet can be easily replaced if damaged.

Upgrade Your Audi Today!

If there’s a feature or technology that you wish came with your Audi, drop by your local specialty mobile enhancement retailer and ask them what they have to offer.

How Do I Make My Car Stereo Sound Better?

Better Car Stereo

Have you ever asked yourself how you can make your car stereo sound better? It’s not an uncommon question in the mobile enhancement industry. With that said, the answer can be somewhat complicated. In this article, we’ll outline a few key steps to take before heading to your local car stereo shop, and we’ll present a few commonly suggested audio upgrade solutions.

Identify the Deficiencies

Before a mobile enhancement retailer can make your car stereo sound better, you need to have an understanding of what needs to be improved. Defining the upgrade could be quite easy in a case where the system doesn’t play loudly enough or doesn’t have enough bass. If the overall tonal balance isn’t to your liking, it would be great if you had an example of what you want it to sound like. If you aren’t pleased with the staging and imaging, how we address the upgrade changes dramatically.

To define what you want to improve, choose a song or two that you know really well and listen to them on as many audio sources as possible. A friend’s car stereo, your home stereo or a set of headphones are all good reference listening options. Make notes about what you like about each and what you’d want to be improved, then bring that information to your local mobile enhancement retailer.

If your retailer has a demo vehicle (and they should!), ask to listen to your chosen songs on that system. Be vocal about your observations. Listen to the lyrics, listen to each instrument and listen to where the sound comes from. If you hear something you like, let the product specialist you are dealing with know.

Define Your Limits

If your friend has a GMC Astro van with four 18-inch subwoofers and 20,000 watts of power, and you are hoping to replicate that level of bass in your Nissan Versa without losing the use of the backseat, you aren’t going to be happy with the outcome. Though deliberately dramatic in our example, the way an audio system performs, especially in terms of bass reproduction, requires a certain amount of equipment and space.

Better Car Stereo

New speakers will typically fit into factory speaker locations. A retailer may suggest that you can improve imaging and staging with a set of tweeters installed in the A-pillars. Are you willing to let them modify the vehicle? New A-pillars are usually quite inexpensive. If you want to return the vehicle to stock, the cost is minimal. New door panels, on the other hand, can easily cost more than $650 as compared to $70 for an A-pillar. Decide what your long-term goals are before agreeing to permanent modifications.

There is also the question of cargo space. In a pickup truck, space under the rear seat or against the back wall can be used for a subwoofer enclosure and an amp rack. In a car, there may be room in the corner of the trunk or in the center of the spare tire. Some enthusiasts are happy to sacrifice their spare tire completely in favor of what is known as a false floor installation.

Car Audio Upgrade Options

Let’s look at a few of the most common audio system upgrades for new vehicles. First and foremost, adding a high-quality subwoofer to even the most premium of factory-installed sound systems usually provides a dramatic improvement in audio system performance. Most vehicle manufacturers aren’t willing to invest in high-power amplifiers and quality subwoofers because they weigh too much and affect vehicle mileage and performance. As such, adding an aftermarket subwoofer enclosure will not only let the stereo reproduce more low-frequency information, but will let it play louder.

Better Car Stereo

If you aren’t pleased with the tonal balance of your stereo, the solution is a bit trickier. One upgrade path that works quite well is to have your retailer install a high-power amplifier with a built-in digital signal processor. The amp can be connected to the factory stereo and the existing speakers in the car. The processor can adjust the frequency response of the sound system to meet your listening preferences.

If your audio system doesn’t play loudly enough, the subwoofer might help, but you are more likely in need of additional amplification. Even some premium sound systems run out of juice just as the music playback level is getting fun. High-power amplifiers can be added to almost any audio system.

You may have noticed that we are leaving the suggestion of a speaker upgrade to the very end. New speakers can make a huge difference in the performance of your sound system, but to maximize the benefit of the upgrade, you need some reasonable power from an amplifier and you should, ideally, have a digital signal processor in the system. Without a way to tune the new speakers for your vehicle, you may not get the most from your investment.

Better Sound Starts with a Plan

Getting better sound from the car stereo in your vehicle isn’t all that hard. If you have done some research and defined your goals, the upgrade process will be relatively easy. Arm yourself with a few great songs and take a drive over to your local specialty mobile enhancement retailer. Let them listen to your existing system and tell them what you want to be improved. They can handle it from there.

Window Tint Adds Protection and Security

Tint Protection

While most people choose to have their vehicle’s windows tinted for styling purposes, high-quality tint adds impressive protection and security. If you’ve read our articles on tinting, then you know that tint does a great job of preventing skin damage by blocking at least 97% of the UV rays from the sun. These same UV rays are responsible for causing cloth, vinyl and leather to dry out, crack and fade. While this is a huge benefit, in this case we’re talking about a different aspect of protection. Curious? Keep reading!

Window Tint Helps Prevent Injuries

We hope you are never in a serious vehicle accident. If you have been, you may have seen how the side and rear windows shatter into thousands of tiny cubes. This happens because the glass is tempered. Windshield glass, on the other hand, breaks into long shards. To keep you safe, windshields are made from two pieces of glass that are bonded to a clear plastic layer. When broken, the glass shards stick to the plastic to keep you safe.

Tint Protection

Adding window film to your side and rear windows works in a similar fashion to that clear plastic layer in your windshield. If the glass breaks, the majority of the little pieces will stay adhered to the film. The film helps prevent pieces of glass from flying through the vehicle and causing additional injury.

Several tint manufacturers offer films that are designed specifically for security and safety. These films have a stronger-than-normal adhesive that holds glass pieces together to help prevent injuries.

Window Tint Improves Safety

Tint Protection
The telltale signs of a broken car window.

In some cities, motor vehicle smash-and-grab thefts are a real problem. If you leave a laptop bag, purse or shopping bag in the car, thieves may break a window and hope that what they steal is worth their effort. Adding tint makes it much harder for thieves to get into the vehicle, even if they have broken a window. The film keeps the glass together, causing the thief to have to wrestle it out of the way to get to the door handle or lock. Knowing that they have limited time to complete their dastardly deed, they are more likely to avoid cars and trucks with tinted windows.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Tint Protection
Dark tint can make it hard for thieves to see what’s inside a vehicle.

Having a nice, dark tint on the rear windows of your vehicle can help conceal your belongings. If a would-be thief is scouring a parking lot for a victim, he or she is likely to skip right over your car, truck or SUV if they can’t see what’s inside. Sure, they can put their face up to the window, but this raises attention to their actions – something they want to avoid at all costs.

Upgrade Your Safety and Security with Automotive Window Tint

While we love to see the cosmetic improvement that window tinting offers, the added safety and security is definitely a positive benefit. If you have questions about automotive window tinting or would like to have your vehicle tinted, drop by your local specialist automotive enhancement retailer today!

Why is This Less Powerful Amplifier More Expensive?

Expensive Amplifier

When it comes to shopping for car audio amplifier upgrades, choosing an expensive amplifier may not mean you get the most power possible for your speakers. Though this statement may seem negative, the reality is that you may have chosen a solution with more features or higher quality over just raw power. Balancing your investment in your sound system is tricky. Let’s look at a few factors that contribute to the cost of the solution you choose.

Does More Power Mean More Money?

Within a series of amplifiers, typically, one that produces more power will cost more money. The cost of an amplifier is determined, in part, by the size and weight of the heatsink and the number of components required to build the amp. This statement is especially true when it comes to subwoofer amplifiers. An amp rated to produce 2,500 watts will need a larger power supply, more heatsink and more output devices to pass current to the speakers than an amp rated for 1,100 watts.

Where things get more complicated is when you start to compare amplifiers from one series to another or from one brand to another. Comparing a low-distortion, low-noise, high-bias Class AB amplifier that produces 65 watts per channel (into four channels) to a compact Class D amp that produces even more power could you see you spending $1,500 on the AB amp and around $500 for the more powerful Class D solution. Does that make the less expensive amp better?

Expensive Amplifier
Amplifiers such as this Brax MX2 from Audiotec Fischer deliver amazing sound with extremely low distortion and noise specifications.

Amplifier Specifications Matter

Comparing amplifiers is like comparing tires for your car. You can go to your local tire shop and tell them you need new tires for your sedan. The most popular tire size in North America is 205/55-16. Now, imagine you are driving a Honda Civic and need a tire to enable you to commute back and forth to work with the occasional errand on the weekend. If you live in the southern U.S., you don’t need to think about winter performance, so as long as the tire is of high-quality, it will serve you well. A Goodyear, BFGoodrich or Continental Touring tire will run you about $105 to $120 each.

Now, let’s say you drive a Subaru Impreza WRX or an Audi A4 that uses the same tire size and you want to take the car to a few track days. You can spend more than $200 on an extreme performance summer tire that will allow the car to corner faster and brake at a much higher rate. It’s not the size of the tire that determines its price, it’s the performance.

Expensive Amplifier
A high-performance tire such as the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S delivers impressive road-holding to dramatically improve any automobile’s performance.

When it comes to high-end amplifiers, the more expensive ones typically add less noise and distortion to the audio signal. This performance makes your music sound clearer and more detailed. The difference is as dramatic as switching from mediocre to premium speakers, but it’s an important part of the product selection process.

Additional Features Add Cost

Another reason a less powerful amplifier may cost more than a high-power alternative comes down to features. If the expensive amplifier has a built-in digital signal processor, you’ll not only be paying for the components in the amp but the time it took to program the configuration software that your installer uses to calibrate your system.

Expensive Amplifier
Image Caption: The ARC Series amplifiers from ARC Audio are available in two-, four- and six-channel configurations and can be upgraded with the IPS8.8 digital signal processor.

Likewise, an amplifier that includes a large number of analog adjustments like infrasonic filters, adjustable bass boost controls, variable crossovers and phase adjustments will likely cost more than an equivalent amp without those features. A remote level control for a subwoofer, built-in fusing for protection, output or clipping indicators and cast heat sinks all add cost.

Which to Choose: Features or Performance?

Truly high-end amplifiers exist to bring out the best in your music. They deliver amazing clarity and extremely low amounts of noise and distortion. If your source unit, speaker and signal processor are already of great quality, then choosing high-end amplifiers is wise. If you’re building a new system from scratch, ensuring that it’s optimized with a digital signal processor is crucial. As such, choosing an amp with a DSP built-in, even if you have to sacrifice some power, is likely a wise choice. Your local specialty mobile enhancement retailer can help you navigate the options available, then install and configure your system so that it sounds amazing.
