Product Spotlight: Hertz Cento Speakers

Hertz CentoKnown for its designs for car audio enthusiasts looking for speakers that sound great and offer exceptional value, Hertz has introduced its new Cento Series of high-performance car audio speakers. Developed using many of the same philosophies and materials as the flagship Mille speakers, Cento (pronounced chen-tow) includes 18 products, with coaxial speakers, two-way component speaker systems and a selection of raw drivers. The series also includes four subwoofers which we’ll look at in a future spotlight.

Hertz Cento Coaxial Speakers

Hertz CentoThe CX-Series coaxial speaker solutions include 4-, 5.25- and 6.5-inch round designs and 5×7 and 6×9 oval offerings. These speakers feature rubber surrounds on the woofers for excellent longevity and soft-dome tweeters for smooth and detailed high-frequency response. All four driver sets use a Semi-Pressed Paper-Mica (SPP-M) cone design that is both rigid and well-damped. The addition of mica powder aids in increasing both features without adding significant weight. In all but the 6×9-inch CX 690, the tweeters include a feature called Rotary High-Frequency Contour, which allows your installer to angle them toward the driver and passenger for improved high-frequency performance. The CX 690 is a three-way design that uses a 1.58-inch tweeter and an 0.8-inch super-tweeter for smooth sound dispersion.

The upgraded Cento Pro CPK coaxial drivers are available in 6.5- and 6×9-inch sizes. These models offer increased power handling and almost 50% more woofer excursion capability for enthusiasts who enjoy their music at higher volume levels. The Pro drivers use a pressed paper cone that was designed using Finite Element Method (FEM) modeling to ensure smooth and natural sound.

Component Speaker Systems

Hertz CentoThe four Cento component speakers include three 6.5-inch component sets and a 5.25-inch set. The CK165 6.5-inch system is the bread and butter of the Cento line. The woofers combine the same SPP-M cone and 1-inch voice coil from the coaxial series with an inverted dust cap. For high-frequency reproduction, a 1-inch Tetolon fiber soft-dome tweeter is included, and several mounting options are provided to make integrating the system into your vehicle easy for your installer. The CCX 2 passive crossover network offers 0 and -3 dB tweeter attenuation options to help tune the system for each application.

The CK 165 F is a similar 6.5-inch speaker system in terms of the tweeter and crossover but features a shallow-mount woofer with a mounting depth of 1.71 inches as opposed to the 2.46-inch requirement of the conventional woofer. Next in line is the CK 165 L component set. The woofers in this set use a non-pressed paper design for natural balance and solid, controlled low-frequency output.

Hertz CentoStepping up to the Cento Pro CPK 165 once again offers additional power handling and more excursion capability. Separate high- and low-pass crossover modules not only improve output capabilities but make installation easier. Also available in the Pro Series is the CPK 690 6×9-inch component set that is a perfect solution for Toyota and Ford vehicles that use a large, oval driver in the front doors. Both Pro-Series sets include the larger CP 25 1.15-inch Tetolon soft-dome tweeter and a lower crossover frequency to help raise the soundstage height.

Cento Component Speakers

Hertz CentoUnique at their price points, the Cento series includes five raw drivers sold in pairs. Your retailer can help you choose from the C 26 or C 26 OE 1-inch tweeters. Both systems include the same 1-inch Tetolon fiber dome design as used in the CK component sets but offer different installation options. The C 26 features a mesh grille for surface mounting and includes an angled mounting bracket. The C 26 OE uses a compact design that is intended to fit into factory tweeter locations behind the factory grilles.

In terms of woofers, your retailer has the choice of the C 165 from the CK 165 component set, the C 165 F from the CK 165 F shallow-mount set or the C 165 L from the CK 165 L set. None of the raw woofer sets come with grilles, but they are available as part number CG 165 and work with all three options.

The raw drivers are a perfect solution for someone who wants to put together a mid-level active speaker system and would work perfectly with an HCP 5D five-channel amplifier, the H8 DSP digital signal processor and an appropriate subwoofer solution.

Product Spotlight: Hertz Mille MLK1650.3 Legend

Hertz Mille MLK1650.3 LegendAs a well-respected name in the mobile electronics industry, Hertz never rests on its laurels when it comes to new product development. Launched in 1999, the Mille Series set an exceptionally high standard for automotive loudspeakers. The new MLK 1650.3 Legend component set is the flagship in the current Mille Series. Designed using state-of-the-art computer simulation technologies and real-world Klippel testing, this version raises the benchmark to an entirely new level of accuracy and performance. Let’s take a deeper look into what makes this one of the premiere speaker solutions in the industry.

ML 280.3 Legend Tweeter

Hertz Mille MLK1650.3 LegendThe 1.1-inch ML 280.3 Legend tweeters feature a Hyperbolic Tetolon fiber dome design, developed using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) computer simulations to provide excellent high-frequency dispersion and low overall distortion. The tweeter frame is machined from a solid aluminum block with a face profile that has been optimized for excellent off-axis performance. The rear chamber has been enlarged by 50% compared to previous designs to improve midrange performance. This increase in air volume, combined with extensive damping material testing, results in a driver with a 900 Hz resonant frequency. This low resonant frequency makes the tweeter beautifully compatible with the 6.5-inch ML1650.3 from this set, as well as the 7-inch ML1800.3 woofer.

A neodymium magnet powers the tweeter and provides excellent voice coil control. A pure copper shorting ring on top of the pole piece dramatically reduces inductance for improved high-frequency performance and reduced distortion. The combination of the Tetolon dome, a low-mass CCAW voice coil and properly managed inductance allows the amazing ML 280.3 to play over a range of almost three octaves.

ML 1650.3 Legend Woofer

Hertz Mille MLK1650.3 LegendThis 6.5-inch ML 1650.3 woofer is based on a proprietary three-spoke cast-aluminum chassis with integrated vents below the spider-mounting ledge. A mixture of pulp paper and cotton fibers has been pressed to create rigid and well-damped cone.

Hertz has implemented its Boundary Free IIR (isobutylene with isoprene) rubber surround on this woofer. The outer edge of the surround extends the effective cone area by 17%. With a larger coupling area comes improved sensitivity and output capability.

An FEA-optimized neodymium magnet powers the woofer and provides excellent efficiency and control. Low carbon content top and bottom plates help to focus the magnetic field flux on the large 1.4-inch CCAW voice-coil winding and its Polyamide former. The pole piece features an aluminum shorting ring to reduce inductance and distortion while extending high-frequency output. Hertz uses a dust cap with a sharply inverted point called V-Cone to help manage high-frequency resonances common to conventional dome shapes. As compared to a conventional dome-shaped dust cap, distortion in the 6kHz range are virtually eliminated and off-axis performance is extended to almost 9 kHz.

MLCX 2 TW.3 Legend Passive Crossover Networks

Hertz Mille MLK1650.3 LegendHertz has included a set of premium passive crossover networks with the MLK 1650.3 set. The crossovers use large-gauge air-wound inductors and high-quality 160 volt polyester film capacitors for exceptional power handling characteristics.

The network includes five heavy-duty slide switches. The first switch allows for bi-amping the network using two amplifier channels. A second switch, labeled Tweeter Level, adds or subtracts 2 dB of output from the reference tweeter level.

The Mid-Contour and Hi-Contour switches affect the crossover points of their respective drivers. With both switches on, the crossover point is 2.5 kHz. With the contour switches off, the crossover frequency is 3.5 kHz. Finally, the Hi-Boost switch provides the ability to increase output between 10 kHz and 20 kHz to compensate for off-axis tweeter installations.

Power Handling

Thanks to the large-diameter voice-coil windings and premium passive crossover components, Hertz has rated the system as being able to handle an impressive 150 watts of power. Combined with the rated 92 dB (at 2.8V) sensitivity and impressive cone excursion capabilities, the MLK 1650.3 Legend system will have no problem getting loud and sounding stunning in any application.

Premium Loudspeaker Solution

The Mille MLK 1650.3 Legend set takes advantage of several technologies that give it a decided edge over its competitors when it comes to reducing distortion and non-linearities at high drive levels. The copper ring on the tweeter and the V-Cone and Boundary Free surround on the woofer provide improved efficiency and high-frequency response as compared to designs without those technologies.

The MLK 1650.3 set is well worth an audition the next time you are in the market for speakers for your vehicle. Visit your local authorized Hertz dealer for more information.

Product Spotlight: Hertz HMX 6.5 Marine Speakers

Hertz HMX 6.5Hertz is proud to introduce a new line of marine and powersports products to their family of premium mobile electronic solutions. Four new amplifiers, seven new speakers and a subwoofer will provide marine and off-road enthusiasts with the same impressive performance that has made Hertz speakers, amplifiers and subwoofers a revered name in cars and trucks for decades. In this product spotlight, we take a closer look at the HMX 6.5 marine and powersport series coaxial speaker products.

HMX 6.5 Design Features

Hertz HMX 6.5The HMX 6.5 is a 6.5-inch coaxially mounted component speaker system. The system uses a polypropylene woofer cone that has been co-molded to a Santoprene rubber surround. The motor and suspension of the woofer feature a 1-inch voice coil that is centered by an aramid fiber spider. The voice coil is vented to help control heat and pressure build-up under the dust cap. Hertz has optimized the suspension for infinite-baffle applications. Silicone-encased tinsel leads offer excellent durability and reliability.

Hertz has provided an over-sized magnet for the woofer for topnotch efficiency. A marine-grade polymer injected basket encases the motor assembly for protection from the elements. There are no protrusions from the basket that could cause life jackets or fishing rods to get hung up as they are pulled past the rear of the speaker.

The speaker has a mounting depth of 3.76 inches. A soft rubber gasket on the back of the mounting flange ensures a tight seal against the boat hull to prevent leaks.

Hertz HMX 6.5The 1.4-inch tweeter PEI dome tweeter is powered by a neodymium magnet and suspended above the woofer in the grille. An acoustically transparent stainless steel mesh insert protects the tweeter from physical damage.

An acoustic lens is incorporated into the tweeter mount to increase off-axis performance. This lens helps to ensure that every seating position has great sound, even if the speakers are mounted down low in the boat. Hertz has integrated a passive crossover network into the side of the speaker chassis. The crossover system includes solid-state tweeter protection circuitry.

Speaker Specifications

Hertz HMX 6.5Hertz rates the HMX 6.5 series of speakers as having a continuous power handling capability of 75 watts, with a 150-watt peak power rating. Each driver has a nominal impedance of 4 ohms, so they are compatible with every source unit and amplifier on the market. An efficiency rating of 90dB ensures that every watt of power sent to the speaker is used efficiently.

Nature Proof Design

Hertz calls their environment design features Nature-proof. The cone, surround, chassis and grille are all made from UV-, salt-, fog- and thermal-shock–resistant marine-grade polymer materials. The design is water- and dust-resistant so it can be used in any outdoor application. The speaker terminals are gold-plated to improve the system’s overall corrosion-resistance characteristics.

Four Options for Any Application

Hertz HMX 6.5Your choice of white or black HMX 6.5 speakers is also available to be purchased with integrated RGB LED lighting. With the LED option, the optional HM RGB 1 BK wireless LED lighting controller can be purchased to further enhance your experience. The wireless control included with the HM RGB 1 BK uses radio frequency communication to allow the user to select from 256 different red, green and blue intensities. The range on the remote is specified as 65 feet.

The HM RGB 1 BK Controller includes options for color-changing patterns. It also has a built-in microphone and 3.5 mm aux input. The controller can change the lighting to the beat and tempo of your music, if you wish.

Hertz HMX 6.5 Series Speakers

As we mentioned, the HMX 6.5 series speakers are just part of the new family of marine and powersports products from Hertz. The line includes marine and powersports trim 8-inch coaxial speakers (only the black version will have the optional LED lighting) and a 10-inch subwoofer in the marine series. Two series of amplifiers round out the offerings – a four-channel and a monoblock in the compact HMP series and a four-channel and two-channel amp in the HCP series.

If your boat, ATV, motorcycle, motorhome or race trailer needs amazing sound, then look into the new marine and powersports offerings from Hertz. Your local authorized Hertz retailer can provide you with installation and pricing details.
