Product Spotlight: Rockford Fosgate Can-Am Defender Audio System

Defender Audio

The Can-Am Defender is a work-focused side-by-side, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun while getting things done. Rockford Fosgate, the undisputed leader in powersports audio upgrades, proudly announces their Stage 1 roof audio upgrade for select 2017 and newer Can-Am Defenders. Let’s check it out!

What Is the Rockford Fosgate DEFEND17-STG1?

Can-Am seems to have decided that very few Defenders come with an audio system. Rockford Fosgate comes to the rescue with their DEFEND18-STG1. This compact audio system mounts to the roof right by the front windshield and includes a PMX-1 media receiver and a pair of 5.25-inch TMS5 Element Ready speakers in custom enclosures.

Defender Audio
The DEFEND17-STG1 is the perfect all-in-one audio system upgrade for select 2017 and newer Can-Am Defender side-by-sides.

PMX-1 Source Unit Features

The heart of the DEFEND18-STG1 Defender audio system is the PMX-1 media receiver. This compact source unit features a 2.3-inch dot-matrix display protected by a tempered glass screen. Unlike similar units with plastic front panels, you don’t have to worry about scratches, fading or yellowing with the PMX-1. A large rotary volume control is in the center, and easily accessed buttons on either side make using the radio while wearing work gloves a non-issue.

The PMX-1 is most commonly connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth. You can stream music stored on your phone or from an online service like Pandora, iHeartRadio or Spotify. The Bluetooth connection supports the AVRCP protocol, so you can change tracks from the radio. The PMX-1 includes an AM/FM tuner with weather band support. It also has a stereo auxiliary input and a USB port, which means you can easily connect a thumb drive to play MP3 or WMA audio files.

Defender Audio
The compact PMX-1 media receiver mounts just above the rear-view mirror for easy visibility and control.

The PMX-1 includes a built-in four-channel amplifier rated to produce 25 watts of power into 4-ohm speakers. That’s about 20% more power than most car radios. The radio also has a built-in seven-band equalizer to let your installer fine-tune the performance of your audio system.

You can even control the PMX-1 from your iPhone or Android smartphone using the RF Connect app. Download the app and pair your phone to give you source and volume control while you’re having lunch or hanging out by the campfire. Rockford Fosgate’s optional PMX-BTUR Bluetooth universal remote is a very worthwhile upgrade. With this remote attached to your steering wheel, you can control the audio system wirelessly.

Defender Audio
The optional PMX-BTUR Bluetooth remote for the PMX-1 makes adjusting the sound system on the trails easy.

TMS5 Speakers Deliver Big Sound

Initially designed for the Tour-Pak speaker locations on the back of many Harley-Davidson motorcycles, the TMS5 speakers are a perfect fit for the Defender audio system. These 5.25-inch coaxial drivers feature carbon-fiber reinforced polypropylene woofer cones with a Santoprene rubber surround for excellent longevity. An ultra-efficient neodymium ring magnet motor works with the oversized 35-mm voice coil to produce impressive output with minimal power.

A 25-mm proprietary film dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet handles high-frequency reproduction. An integrated phase plug over the tweeter helps deliver even sound distribution through the listening environment. The heart of these speakers is a glass-reinforced polymer frame that can withstand extreme temperatures. Rockford Fosgate rates the TMS5 speakers as being 91 dB efficient (at 1W/1M) and capable of handling 65 watts of power. As is practice with Rockford Fosgate, these specifications comply with the CTA-2031 standard, so you know you can trust them.

Defender Audio
Speaker pods that mount to the roof of your Defender serve as an ideal enclosure for the TMS5 speakers.

Features of the DEFEND17-STG1

No speaker will sound good without an appropriate enclosure. The DEFEND17-STG1 system includes durable, weather-resistant pods that attach to the steel roll bar on your Defender. Once in place, the bracket and mounting panel for the PMX-1 source unit fit in the middle to hold everything securely. Your installer doesn’t have to drill holes or cut anything to complete the installation. Rockford Fosgate includes all the wiring and fasteners needed to complete the installation.

Defender Audio
The DEFEND717-STG1 works with two- and four-door Defenders and mounts securely at the top of the windshield.

Designed to Sound Great for Years

All Defender audio system components feature Rockford Fosgate’s Element Ready design. This means they’re constructed from UV-resistant materials, so they won’t fade, yellow or crack. They are also weather-resistant, so they’ll continue to work if they get wet, dusty or muddy. Where Rockford Fosgate takes things further is their testing to ensure that the products can handle extreme temperatures. Whether blasting through the woods on a hot August afternoon or returning from a mid-winter hunting expedition, you can count on your audio system to keep working. The Defender system is also engineered to cope with the impacts and vibration that are typical for side-by-side and off-road applications. Rockford Fosgate stands behind its powersports audio upgrade solutions with a two-year warranty.

Defender Audio
Water, dirt, dust, extreme temperatures and vibration are no match for Rockford Fosgate’s Element Ready powersports products.

Product Spotlight: Rockford Fosgate Polaris Ranger Roof Audio Systems

Polaris Ranger Audio

Polaris Rangers are among the most popular side-by-sides for work applications. Rockford Fosgate, a leader in motorsports audio systems, has just introduced three stunning roof-mount audio solutions that will transform these vehicles into a concert on wheels. All three options include speakers and amplification in custom enclosures. Let’s check them out!

Rockford Fosgate Polaris Ranger Audio Systems

Let’s start by looking at the Rockford Fosgate RNGR18-ROOF2M2. This audio system upgrade includes a replacement roof panel for 2018 and newer XP1000 full-size (three-seat) models. The new roof panel works with the tip-out windshield and Northstar Edition versions with power windows.

Polaris Ranger Audio
The RNGR18-ROOF2M2 includes a 1,500-watt amplifier, four speakers and a PMX-3 multimedia receiver.

The new roof panel features four M2-8B 8-inch speakers, an M5-1500X5 1,500-watt five-channel amplifier, and the brand new 2.7-inch PMX-3 multimedia receiver. All the equipment comes pre-installed and wired, so your installer need only mount the roof using the provided hardware and run the included power wiring to the battery.

The roof also includes six rocker switches. These switches control the sound system, activate a backup camera or even provide power to an optional 30- to 40-inch LED light bar. There’s a plug outside the roof for the light bar.

Polaris Ranger Audio
Six integrated switches flank the new PMX-3 multimedia receiver to control various functions and options.
Polaris Ranger Audio
You can upgrade your Roof Audio system with a 30- to 40-inch light bar, and all the wiring is ready.

Because the kit includes one of the fantastic M5-1500X5 five-channel amplifiers, it’s ready for upgrades. You can add the RNGR18-FWE under-seat enclosure and an M2D2-10IB subwoofer. The roof also features an integrated LED dome light and connections for power windows.

Polaris Ranger Audio
The RNGRG18-FWE subwoofer enclosure and M2D2-10IB subwoofer can be powered by the M5-1500X5 amp in the RNGR18-ROOF2M2.

If you want to take the party everywhere, add the optional RNGR18-CAPM2 rear audio speaker cap. This external speaker pod replaces the blank pod that came with the RNGR18-ROOF2M2 kit and adds four M2-8HB horn-load M2-series 8-inch speakers and an M5-800X4 four-channel amplifier. All the power and audio connections plug into the RNGR18-ROOF2M2.

Polaris Ranger Audio
The RNGR18-CAPM2 upgrades your roof speaker panel to ensure that everyone on the trail or at the campsite can enjoy great sound.

The RNGR18-CAPM2 has a few other tricks up its sleeve. The switch in the RNGR18-ROOF2M2 controls two LED work lights. The rear cap also has a backup camera called the MX-CAM. One of the rocker switches activates the camera, so the image appears on the PMX-3.

Polaris Ranger Audio
The new Rockford Fosgate MX-CAM comes pre-installed and pre-wired with the RNGR18-CAPM2 speaker cap.

Four-door Polaris Ranger Subwoofer Upgrade

If you have a four-door, six-seat Ranger, the RNGR18-ROOF4M2 roof speaker system was designed just for you. This kit starts with the RNGR-ROOFM2 and adds a rear roof panel with four additional 8-inch M2-series M2-8H coaxial drivers and two 10-inch M2D2-10IB M2-Series subwoofers in a ported enclosure. There are power provisions for rear doors with power windows and an additional integrated LED rear dome light. You can upgrade the RNGR18-ROOF4M2 with the optional RNGRG18-CAPM2 if you want more sound. The under-seat subwoofer upgrade is also compatible with the four-door system.

Killer Sound and Amazing Looks

The new PMX-3 multimedia receiver can play all your favorite tunes from your smartphone or tune into your favorite genre-specific entertainment with an optional SiriusXM satellite radio tuner. When the MX-CAM is connected, you can see everything behind your side-by-side with the flick of a switch.

The M2 speakers and subwoofers in the Ranger Roof Audio systems all have integrated Color Optix LED lighting. The PMX-RGB Bluetooth lighting controller is built into the RNGR18-ROOF2M2 enclosure. Just download the RF Connect app on your Android or Apple smartphone, pair it, and you have complete control over the color of your new Rockford Fosgate speakers.

Rockford Fosgate knows you bought your Ranger to work and play, so all the new Roof Audio systems, the speakers and the electronics, feature their Element Ready products that are water-, dust-, dirt- and UV-resistant. Product Spotlight: Rockford Fosgate HD14RGST-STAGE3 Harley-Davidson Stereo Upgrade

Rockford Fosgate HD14RGST-STAGE3

Rockford Fosgate has cemented itself as the undisputed leader in Harley-Davidson motorcycle audio system upgrades in the past few years. They offer dozens of direct bolt-in speaker and amplifier kits for all the popular touring bike models. In this spotlight, we will look at the HD14RGST-STAGE3 aftermarket audio system for 2014 and newer Street Glide and 2015 and up Road Glide touring bikes. This kit also works with the Road Glide Special and Street Glide Special bikes from the same year.

Rockford Fosgate Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Sound Systems

Rockford Fosgate HD14RGST-STAGE3

Harley-Davidson has done a good job engineering the Boom! Box infotainment system on the latest touring bikes. Although the source unit is amazing, the first-generation factory-installed sound system falls short in speaker output capability and power delivery. Rockford Fosgate’s HD14RGST-STAGE3 kit is the perfect upgrade to make the audio system crystal clear at 75 mph and even drown out that rowdy exhaust note.

The HD14RGST-STAGE3 includes a set of Power Series 6.5-inch speakers and grilles for the front fairing, a pair of 6×9-inch speakers and grilles for the saddlebags, a Power Series four-channel amplifier and all the wiring, connectors and mounting components your installer will need to complete the installation. Best of all, everything integrates into the wiring on the bike without any modifications so it won’t affect a brand-new motorcycle’s electrical system warranty.

The TMS65 and TMS69 speakers in the kit were designed specifically for motorcycle and powersports applications – meaning they are frequency-response tuned for open-air environments and protected to withstand the harsh outdoors. They include oversized voice coils on the woofers to handle extreme power levels for long periods. The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) cone and surround design increases the effective radiating area of these drivers to deliver more output than conventional drivers. Grilles are included for both the Road Glide and Street Glide fairings.

The HD14RGST-STAGE3 system includes the TMS69BL14 saddlebag speaker installation kit. Your installer can mount the TMS69 speakers in the bag lid covers quickly and efficiently with these parts. There’s no need to spend money or waste time color-matching new lid covers to get great sound. Finally, these speakers are designed to meet Rockford Fosgate’s strict Element Ready requirements to withstand rain, dust and prolonged UV exposure without failing.

Rockford Fosgate HD14RGST-STAGE3
The TMS69BL14 Saddlebag Speaker Kit is a perfect solution to add big sound to your existing saddlebags.

The TM400X4ad four-channel amplifier is rated to simultaneously produce up to 100 watts of power to each of the four speakers. Knowing how Rockford Fosgate rates its amps, actual power is likely 10 to 15% higher. The system includes the RFK-HD14 amplifier mounting bracket with an integrated heatsink that works with Bat Wing and Shark Nose fairings. Power wiring, speaker connectors and signal input harness with OE-grade Harley-specific connectors are also included. The optional DSR1 digital signal processor can easily be added to upgrade the system using the included loop-through harness.

Speaking of the factory-installed Boom! Box radio, an authorized Rockford Fosgate retailer will need to flash the software in the radio to change its built-in equalizer settings before bringing the new amp and speakers to life. You can find a retailer with the tools and training to do this here.

Rockford Fosgate HD14RGST-STAGE3
Everything your installer needs to integrate the new speakers and amplifier into the wiring on your bike is included with the HD14RGST-STAGE3 kit.

Enjoy Your Favorite Music on the Road

If you’ve ever been frustrated that the audio system on your motorcycle starts to distort and become garbled just before it gets loud enough, the HD14RGST-STAGE3 is the cure. The new speakers are more efficient and sound better than what comes with most motorcycles. The amplifier can deliver clean and clear power to extract every ounce of performance from the new Power Series motorcycle speakers. In short, even if you’re cruising down the interstate with friends, Rockford Fosgate’s motorcycle speaker and amplifier kit will ensure that Clapton, Seger, Cash or Skynyrd will absolutely rock!

Product Spotlight: Rockford Fosgate M5-1500X Marine/Powersports Amp

Rockford Fosgate M5-1500X5

Whether you have a Jeep that gets muddy, a side-by-side that thinks it’s a part-time submarine, or a boat that’s always getting swamped, Rockford Fosgate’s M5-1500X5 powersports amplifier can be the heart of an impressive audio system upgrade. This five-channel amplifier can deliver the power your speakers need to reproduce audio with amazing clarity while driving a subwoofer or two to give your music impact and warmth – all from a single chassis. If you agree that this sounds like the perfect upgrade for your mobile sound system, read on to learn more about this fantastic amplifier.

Rockford Fosgate M5-1500X5 Specifications

The M5-1500X5 amplifier is rated to produce 100 watts per channel from the four main channels and an impressive 600 watts from the subwoofer channel. The front channels can drive 2- or 4-ohm loads while the subwoofer channel is optimized to produce that power into a 2- or 1-ohm load. The sub channel makes 400 watts into a 4-ohm load. If you have an application where you need huge power for a set of tower speakers, the front and rear channel pairs can be bridged to drive a pair of 4-ohm loads with 200 watts to each speaker. Of course, all of the specifications for the amp are compliant with the CTA-2006 standard, so you know you can trust the ratings. Based on our experience with the M5-1000X1, the numbers are likely conservative.

The front, rear and subwoofer channels each have a dedicated sensitivity control, Punch EQ control and a crossover that’s adjustable between 50 and 250 Hz. The Punch EQ allows up to 18 dB of boost at 45 hertz on the subwoofer channel and combines that bass attenuation with treble boost centered at 12.5 kHz on the front channels. The crossover on the front channels can be run in high- or low-pass modes or defeated completely. The adjustable subwoofer channel crossover is always on and limits high-frequency information. Your installer can connect an RCA cable directly to the RCA input for the sub channel, or set the Sub Input Switch off and let the amp combine the signals from the front and rear channel inputs. The subwoofer channel has a fixed -12 dB/octave infrasonic filter that’s set to 30 hertz to protect your subwoofers and optimize their output. There’s also a two- or four-channel switch on the end of the amp by the input connections. Setting this to two-channel mode copies the signal from the front channel inputs to the rear channels.

Rockford Fosgate includes their C.L.E.A.N. input and output monitoring circuit, making it easy for your installer to maximize the signals going into the amp and set the output level controls to deliver maximum performance. They’ve also included a PRESET switch for level and crossover settings for use with their vehicle-specific Motorsports stage kits. These settings can be invoked by activating the PRESET switch on each channel.

Rockford Fosgate M5-1500X5
Your installer has easy access to settings and adjustments for each pair of channels right from the top of the M5-1500X5 amplifier.

The amplifier makes use of several technologies found on other premium Rockford Fosgate amplifiers. The NOMAD protection circuitry guards against short circuits on the speaker connections. The Class-AD and Class-BD designs help to ensure good efficiency to maximize the capabilities of the magneto or alternator and battery on your boat or side-by-side. Likewise, the lightly regulated P.O.W.E.R. technology for the power supply design allows the amplifier to maximize output power when it’s fed with more voltage. Finally, the Maximum Efficiency Heat Sink Application (MEHSA) heat sink design helps to ensure that the amp keeps running when pushed hard by spreading thermal energy throughout the chassis.

Rockford Fosgate M5-1500X5
The Rockford Fosgate M5-1500X5 includes speaker-level and RCA preamp input harnesses to make the amp compatible with all manner of signal sources.

Five-Channel Powersports Amplifier Layout

The M5-1500X5 is based on a 4.25- by 1.7-inch extruded aluminum chassis that’s 12.3 inches long, including the cast aluminum end-caps. The connections for input signals, along with speaker and power output, are made via pigtail harnesses that attach to each end of the amplifier. The harnesses are held in place with screws and feature gaskets to ensure that everything is watertight.

The controls are on the top of the amp on the left side and are protected by a removable cover once set. As you’d expect, the cover includes a rubber gasket to keep water, dust and debris out of the amp. The combination of these waterproofing features gives the amp an IPX6 water and dust intrusion rating. Rockford Fosgate calls this their Element Ready design, and it includes testing for prolonged UV exposure as well as corrosion resistance.

Rockford Fosgate M5-1500X5
The controls on the top of the amp are protected by a watertight removal cover that maintains the IPX6 water intrusion rating.

Upgrade Your Adventure with Rockford Fosgate

Your local authorized Rockford Fosgate dealer would be happy to design an audio system upgrade for your boat, side-by-side, off-roader or Jeep using the M5-1500X5. You can find a dealer near you by using the Dealer Locator on their website. To keep up with the latest new product release, cool events and amazing vehicle features from Rockford Fosgate, be sure to follow them on Facebook, Instagram and their YouTube channel.

Product Spotlight: Rockford Fosgate HD14-SBSUB Motorcycle Subwoofers

Motorcycle Subwoofer

The team at Rockford Fosgate continues to lead the industry in Harley-Davidson motorcycle audio system upgrades. Their latest offering is the HD14-SBSUB dual 10-inch saddlebag subwoofer kit. That’s right! The kit adds a pair of 10-inch subwoofers to the saddlebags of most 2014 or newer Road Glide, Street Glide or Electra Glide bikes. With 800 watts of power on tap, you bet you can hear these beauties as you drive down the road, even at freeway speeds.

Amazing Bass with No Fabrication

Few shops around the country can modify a saddlebag or motorcycle trunk to house a subwoofer. Rockford Fosgate wanted to offer a bass solution that any reputable shop could integrate into a client’s Harley in one day. They designed this subwoofer system to include a pair of rotomolded high-density polyethylene enclosures that drop into the factory hardshell bags.

The kit also includes an 800-watt M5-800X4 four-channel amplifier, a set of grilles with cutting templates and all the wiring required to upgrade this to their HD14-TKIT, HD14U-STAGE2, HD14U-STAGE3, HD14RGSG-STAGE2 or the HD14RGSG-STAGE3 kits. The kit isn’t designed to be used with bikes using the factory amplifier or with the factory-equipped stretched saddlebags.

Motorcycle Subwoofer
Everything your installer needs to integrate this subwoofer system into your Harley-Davidson is included in the kit.

The enclosures are designed so that they can slide in and out of the saddlebags quickly and easily. If you need to remove one (or both) to carry clothes or supplies for a long ride, each has a Deutsch connector to make removal efficient and painless.

The enclosures are loaded with Rockford Fosgate Element-Ready M1D2-10B 10-inch subwoofers with their dual 2-ohm voice coils configured in series to present a 4-ohm load. These subwoofers feature 2-inch-diameter voice coils, synthetic fiber spiders, Santoprene rubber surrounds and mineral-filled polypropylene woofer cones. Each subwoofer is rated to handle 300 watts of continuous power, and they have a peak power rating of 1,200 watts. Best of all, their Element Ready design means they can get dusty, wet or dirty without fear of damage. So, hose them off and you’re ready to rock again.

The amp is wired in a bridged configuration and can provide a healthy 200 watts of continuous power to each subwoofer with up to 400 watts on tap for dynamic bursts. Having previously tested the M5-1000X1 monoblock subwoofer amp, those continuous numbers are likely under-rated, even with the specifications being CTA-2006 compliant. The brake-side enclosure has clearance at the back that allows the amplifier to be installed in the saddlebag.

Motorcycle Subwoofer
There’s room for the 800-watt M5-800X4 amplifier behind the subwoofer enclosure on the brake-side saddlebag.

Just like the TMS69BL14 saddlebag speaker kits from Rockford Fosgate, the HD14-SBSUB includes two-piece grilles and a cutting template for the inside of the bags. Your installer can mask off the bags, position the template in the shock-well on the inside of the bags, then cut an opening for the grille and drill the required wire access holes. The two-piece grille clamps around the ABS plastic body of the bags to provide a clean and tidy finish. Two-sided 3M tape seals the outer edge of the grille, and a foam gasket on the inside support ring means there’s no rattling when the volume is cranked. Rockford includes a set of inserts for the grilles if you have cargo that needs to stay clean and dry. The subwoofers, enclosures and even the amplifier are water-resistant, so you don’t need to panic if you get caught in the rain.

Motorcycle Subwoofer
The motorcycle subwoofer kit includes grille covers for those times when cargo-carrying supersedes the need for amazing bass.

Speaking of the saddlebag 6×9 speaker kits, the top of the subwoofer enclosures are recessed so that those speakers still fit perfectly. The subwoofer kit even includes new wire mounts for the 6×9 lid kit wiring. Can you imagine a bike with TMS65 speakers in the fairing, a second set of TMS65 speakers in lower pods, the TMS69 speakers and an HD14-SBSUB system in the bags? That’s 1,200 watts of power and more speakers and subs than many cars or trucks!

Motorcycle Subwoofer
The tops of the subwoofer enclosures are recessed to provide room for the TMS69 saddlebag speaker kits.

Reliable System Installation and Configuration

As mentioned, the kit includes all the wiring required for your installer to complete the installation. Eight AWG cables that connect directly to the battery under the seat handle power delivery to the amp. A water-resistant fuse holder is molded into the positive power wire to keep things safe. For signal, a T-harness that works with any of the speaker and upgrade kits we mentioned earlier is included. Your installer can run the wiring up to the fairing and make the connections.

All the harnesses are protected with braided loom to protect everything from damage, even on a bike with lumpy cams. The harness system allows the bags to be removed for servicing by unplugging the connectors.

Motorcycle Subwoofer
If you’re interested in upgrading your Harley-Davidson touring bike, check the compatibility chart.

Rockford Fosgate hasn’t just simplified the installation and wiring of the kit. They’ve included an easy-to-follow setup guide for the amplifier. Your installer can copy the settings to the four-channel amp for the subwoofers, then set a high-pass filter on the amp in the fairing for the high-frequency speakers. Once set, you’re ready to rock. This upgrade kit requires the factory radio to be flashed. This radio recalibration process will be completed during the installation of one of the supporting amplifier and speaker kits.

Motorcycle Subwoofer
Quick-connectors allow the saddlebags to be removed easily for servicing without affecting the reliability of the subwoofer system.

Upgrade Your Harley-Davidson with the new Saddlebag Subwoofer System

Upgrading a motorcycle audio system to deliver great bass has always been a challenge. However, Rockford Fosgate just made this a whole lot easier with their HD14-SBSUB system. Drop by your local authorized Rockford Fosgate dealer to audition this fantastic upgrade and get a price on having it installed on your motorcycle. You can find a dealer using their dealer locator.
