Upgrades for Your Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe and GMC Yukon

Tahoe and Yukon Upgrades

As some of the largest people-movers on the road, the GMC Yukon and the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe can benefit from the countless upgrades that are available for them. Whether you want a subtle improvement in audio system performance with a custom-fit subwoofer solution or you want to shake the paint off the walls with an all-out SPL system, the Suburban and its little brothers, the Tahoe and Yukon, have become popular with people who want big sound combined with space and comfort. Let’s dive into what your local specialty mobile enhancement retailer offers to personalize your full-size General Motors SUV.

Stereo System Upgrades for Full-Size General Motors SUVs

Every great mobile audio system needs to start with a premium source. Companies like Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer and Alpine have amazing multimedia receivers that include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. These smartphone integration technologies allow the driver or passenger to use simple voice commands to make phone calls, send text messages or choose from dozens of entertainment options.

Even cooler, navigation applications like Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze provide detailed turn-by-turn navigation instructions to almost any address in North America. These nav apps use real-time traffic flow information in major urban areas to plot the most efficient route possible to your destination to help save you time.

Once you’ve established a source solution for your mobile sound system, it’s time to choose great amplifiers and speakers to convert your digital audio collection into something you can listen to. We’ve talked at length about the importance of selecting amplifiers and speakers that add as little distortion as possible to the audio signal. For amplifiers, the signal-to-noise (S/N or SNR) ratio and the total harmonic distortion (THD) specifications will be the telltale numbers to look at to determine quality. When possible, look for brands that offer specifications that comply with the CTA-2006 standards for S/N. This standard makes comparing specs from one brand to another easy and accurate. Companies that post specs citing maximum power output simply try to inflate numbers to make themselves look better than their competitors. Look for S/N ratio numbers around 80 dB or better referenced to 1 watt of output and THD numbers under 0.03%. It should go without saying that outrageous claims from bargain-basement and internet-only brands are worth ignoring.

You’ll notice that we didn’t talk about the power production capabilities of the amplifiers you choose first. That wasn’t an oversight. Power production has little or nothing to do with the quality of the amp you choose. There are subwoofer amps that produce thousands of watts for only a few hundred dollars. Sadly, they are often inefficient, electrically noisy and add a lot of distortion to the audio signal. Sticking with top-quality brands found at specialty mobile enhancement retailers is a good first step in picking a solution that will sound great and last for years. The Product Specialist you are working with can recommend an appropriately powerful amplifier for your audio system upgrade.

Tahoe and Yukon Upgrades
The Helix M FOUR DSP is a compact four-channel amplifier with an integrated eight-channel signal processor.

Just as with the selection of a car audio amplifier, choosing speakers for your SUV should be based on quality and accuracy. When executed correctly, technologies like aluminum shorting rings, copper magnet caps and XBL^2 motor geometry can dramatically reduce the amount of distortion a speaker adds, especially at higher volume levels. You also want to choose speakers that offer the flattest frequency response possible. Any peaks, dips or bumps in their response is a sign of unwanted resonance in the cone, dust cap, surround or suspension. A well-engineered speaker will sound excellent with any type of music.

You’ll want to work with your local specialty mobile enhancement retailer to choose solutions that work with your vehicle and will deliver smooth and natural balance throughout the entire listening environment. This type of upgrade may require creating a three-way front stage speaker system with a dedicated mid-woofer, midrange driver and tweeter on each side of the vehicle. Depending on the year and trim level of your big SUV, the option for custom fabrication of dash, A-pillar and sail-panel mounts will increase your speaker upgrade options.

Audio System Calibration Is Crucial

If you’re a car guy or girl, you know that an engine needs to be tuned to function smoothly and reliably. Having new speakers integrated into your vehicle requires the same amount of calibration to ensure that what you hear sounds amazing. If you’re planning an audio system upgrade, make sure the retailer you are working with has included a high-quality digital signal processor in the system design and an appropriate amount of time allotted to its configuration.

A digital signal processor will take care of crossovers, level control between different size and efficiency drivers, equalization and signal delay. If you want your music to sound like it did in the recording studio, then proper system design, installation and adjustments are crucial.

Subwoofers – The Ultimate Car Audio Upgrade

If you thought we were going to forget to talk about car audio subwoofers, you were mistaken. Often considered one of the best car audio upgrades for your money, adding a subwoofer to your big SUV will not only improve the reproduction of low-frequency audio information, but it also allows the midrange speakers in your vehicle to sound better and lets them play more loudly.

Subwoofers for your Suburban, Tahoe or Yukon come in two flavors. For those seeking realism, a solution that blends with the cosmetic styling of the vehicle is a wise choice. If you want to make the most bass possible and rattle your fillings, well, that’s most certainly an option as well. Fitting an off-the-shelf subwoofer solution in the cargo area or having something built specifically for your vehicle are great options. Talk with your salesperson about the subwoofer enclosure options for your vehicle and your listening preferences, as well as how much space it will take up in the back.

Remote Start and Secure Your Vehicle

Adding a remote starter to your SUV isn’t just a great way to warm it up in the winter. You can use one to run the air conditioning for a few minutes on a hot summer today to cool it off. Just as with audio system upgrades, the company and technician you choose to integrate a starter into your vehicle is as crucial as the products you select. You want to find a shop that will take their time with the project. Every wire should be tested for functionality before making an electrically and mechanically secure connection. Components should, of course, be adequately secured, and all cabling and wiring should be routed away from moving parts or sources of heat.

When shopping for a starter, you have a few options. First, the Product Specialist should begin the conversation by asking you where you park your vehicle at home and work. This information will help them choose a remote solution that has enough range capability to communicate with the vehicle. Remotes are available with range capabilities from a few hundred feet to over 3 miles. Keep in mind that extra transmitting power is needed when you’re in a building, even if you’re only a few hundred feet from your vehicle. Next, they’ll likely ask to see the vehicle key to help determine what features you may want to control from the remote.

Another option you’ll have is choosing between a one- or two-way remote control. A one-way remote sends a signal to the vehicle. If the signal is strong enough, the vehicle executes the function. In a two-way system, the remote sends a command to the controller in the vehicle. The controller transmits a confirmation message back to the remote so you know the doors are locked or the engine is running. Many two-way remotes will also work with security systems to let you know if the alarm system has been triggered.

Tahoe and Yukon Upgrades
The mother of all remote starters is the Compustar PRO T13 system. This security and starter system includes a 3-mile remote, a Drone telematics interface and class-leading reliability.

Finally, you have the option of a telematics system. Telematics use an app on your smartphone to communicate to a cellular radio module connected to your remote starter system. You can send commands to the starter or security controller in your vehicle using the app and your wireless internet connection. Likewise, the controller will respond when the command has been received and executed. Most telematics systems have the option to add GPS-based functionality such as vehicle locating, curfew alerts, towing warnings and much more. These location-based options usually cost a few extra dollars a month, but they are a great investment for business owners or families that need to keep track of a vehicle.

Truck Accessories

Once you’ve got the electronics on your SUV sorted, it’s time for some accessories. A set of vehicle-specific floor mats from a company like WeatherTech is a great way to protect your investment and keep it clean. These mats are constructed from a durable rubber that’s contoured to match the vehicle’s floor and extend up the firewall to contain sand, mud, dirt and slush.

Tahoe and Yukon Upgrades
WeatherTech offers floor mats for full-size GM SUVs with either bench or bucket seats. The mats are available in black, cocoa, tan or gray to match the vehicle interior.

Other popular upgrades include side steps or running boards that make it easier to get in and out of a tall vehicle. Bug and wind deflectors made from high-strength acrylic will protect your vehicle from damage. Mudflaps as well as trailer hitch and bumper upgrades are also popular.

Tahoe and Yukon Upgrades
Extreme Audio in Mechanicsville, Virginia, upgraded this 2016 Suburban with a set of WeatherTech mud flaps to protect the rear bumper.
Tahoe and Yukon Upgrades
Precision Audio in Bainbridge, Georgia, installed a Ranch Hand grille guard and 20-inch Helo HE900 wheels wrapped in Toyo Open Country AT tires on this 2017 Chevy Tahoe.
Tahoe and Yukon Upgrades
Mobile Edge in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, upgraded this 2016 Tahoe with a set of motorized PowerStep side steps to make getting in and out easier.

If your SUV didn’t come with a backup camera, you might want to ask about adding one. With a rear window that’s several feet off the ground, seeing objects or people when parking can be difficult. Backup cameras can be integrated into a new multimedia receiver or, in many cases, into a factory-installed display screen in the dash.

Tahoe and Yukon Upgrades
The MCI-GM51 from PAC works with the LVDI screen on the 8-inch display in many GM SUVs to add four camera inputs with automatic side and rear triggering.

Another safety upgrade is to add dedicated left and right cameras to the side-view mirrors to act as a blind-spot monitoring solution. Many new Kenwood radios include multiple camera inputs, and some modules will work with the factory-installed MyLink screen to display a camera image when the turn signal is activated.

Window Tint and Paint Film Add Premium Protection

It’s hard to deny that a black Suburban with tinted windows isn’t a classic piece of kit. Window tint not only looks great, but it can block as much as 99% of the ultraviolet energy from the sun to protect the occupants. This UV rejection also helps to prevent plastics, leather and vinyl from drying out and fading. Premium nanotechnology and ceramic window films can block as much as 70% of the infrared heat energy from the sun to help keep your SUV cool. If you live somewhere with hot summers, then a heat-rejecting window film is a great upgrade. High-quality films have a lifetime warranty against fading, turning purple, peeling or bubbling.

Tahoe and Yukon Upgrades
Driven Sound and Security in Marquette, Michigan, tinted the driver and passenger windows of this 2019 Suburban with 3M FX Premium film to match the rear windows.

Another upgrade available from many mobile enhancement retailers is paint protection film. These transparent films are constructed from a durable urethane that absorbs impacts from gravel and stones to prevent paint chips. Paint film is also a great upgrade around door handles, the rear bumper and the rocker panels where there’s a lot of contact. Most high-quality films are backed by a 10-year warranty against peeling or yellowing.

Lighting Upgrades

If you have an older Tahoe, Yukon or Suburban, you may want to ask about upgrading the headlights with new LED bulbs. Compared to incandescent halogen bulbs, LED designs can deliver up to four times as much output. Just as with audio equipment, there are good bulbs, and there are low-quality solutions. Look for a retailer that can install the bulbs and check their alignment and cut-off pattern to ensure that you won’t blind oncoming drivers. You’ll also want to ask about the new bulbs’ warranty as they can be quite expensive to replace frequently.

Tahoe and Yukon Upgrades
The GTR Lighting Ultra 2.0 LED bulbs combine proper LED chip placement with an excellent heat sink design that keeps your lights performing reliably for years.

If you are adventuring off the pavement or use your SUV for work, then auxiliary lighting is a good investment. Spot, driving and floodlights on the front of the vehicle can help improve long-distance visibility. Safety and emergency lighting that includes a roof-mounted light bar or beacon and flashing light pods in the grille can help alert oncoming drivers to the presence of your vehicle when working by the side of the road at night.

Radar Detectors and Laser Defense Systems

If you have a heavy right foot, you might want to consider purchasing a radar detector for your SUV. Most new models on the market offer excellent X, K and Ka-band sensitivity while rejecting false alarms from adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring systems. As more and more police forces move to lidar, a portable detector will only alert you to its presence. By then, it’s often too late. A custom-installed radar detector and laser defense system can transmit a scrambled light signal to prevent law enforcement officers from measuring your speed. Once you know your speed is legal, you can cancel the signal transmission and let the officer take a reading.

Tahoe and Yukon Upgrades
Westminster Speed and Sound upgraded this 2017 Suburban with a custom-installed radar detector and laser shifter system from Escort.

Upgrade Your Full-Size Chevy or GMC SUV Today

These are just a few of the options available to personalize and enhance your Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade or Yukon. Your local specialty mobile enhancement retailer has hundreds of additional upgrades and accessories to make your big SUV more comfortable, functional or enjoyable.

Audio and Convenience Upgrades for Ford Super Duty Trucks

Super Duty Upgrades

If you own or are considering purchasing or leasing a Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty truck, your local specialty mobile enhancement retailer has a seemingly unlimited list of audio, convenience and accessory upgrades available. Whether you want to add a subwoofer for better bass response, upgraded lighting for better visibility, or running boards to improve safety, they can help. Let’s look at some of the most popular truck accessories available for Ford’s workhorse vehicles.

Ford Super Duty Truck Stereo Upgrades

Ford has done an admirable job of creating a radio solution for its Super Duty trucks. Most new models include Sync 3 voice recognition technology to make it easy to choose music or make phone calls. Where all automakers fall short is in their choice of speakers. They do a good job with amplification and signal processing, but the speakers simply aren’t up to the challenge of creating a realistic listening experience. Don’t fret, this can be fixed.

The first upgrade that anyone who cares about the accuracy of their music should consider is a subwoofer. The simplest is an under-the-seat self-powered subwoofer. These add some warmth and impact to your music while remaining relatively cost-effective. Some include a remote control that allows the listener to adjust the bass level to suit the music or his listening preferences.

If you want an audio system that will reproduce the lowest notes from a synthesizer or kick drum, then you’ll want to look at a component subwoofer and a larger enclosure. Several companies offer 8-, 10- and 12-inch subwoofers with shallow baskets and compact motors. These shallow-mount subwoofers are designed specifically for under- and behind-the-seat enclosures in pickup trucks. When combined with a high-power amplifier, the bass will be louder, play deeper and provide a more realistic listening experience.

Super Duty Upgrades
MTI Acoustics in College Station, Texas, offers a subwoofer enclosure that fits behind the seat of fourth-generation Super Duty trucks.

Better Speakers for Improved Clarity

Once you’ve upgraded the system with a subwoofer, adding an amplifier and new speakers is the next step in getting great sound. New speakers can handle a lot more power than those supplied by the factory. You’ll hear more detail in your recordings and be able to turn the volume up higher without introducing distortion.

You may want to consider choosing a new amp for your truck that includes a built-in digital signal processor. Your installation technician can use the processor to set crossovers and output levels for each speaker in the system, then use the equalizer and signal delay features to optimize the output of each speaker for their position in the vehicle. When executed properly, the system will sound like you are sitting in your living room or den, right in front of a set of high-end speakers. You’ll be able to hear the position of each instrument on the virtual soundstage, which adds amazing realism to the listening experience.

Radio Upgrades Add Features and Entertainment

If you have an older truck with a low-tech radio, you may want to consider upgrading to something with Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming capabilities. Radios that play music from your smartphone using a USB cable are also popular options. If you want something amazing, check out the latest floating-face radio options that include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These multimedia receivers will fit into standard single-DIN radio openings while providing a large touchscreen interface that’s easy to see.

Super Duty Upgrades
The Sony XAV-AX8000 features a large 8.95-inch display and includes CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.

Backup Camera and Safety Systems

If your truck didn’t come with a backup camera, you may want to consider adding one. Many Super Duty trucks are four feet tall at the top of the tailgate. This means that a child could stand upright behind the vehicle and they would be completely hidden from view in the rearview mirror. Several companies have replacement tailgate handles for Ford trucks that include a backup camera. There are also Ford badges with camera options.

Super Duty Upgrades
Many companies offer backup camera solutions that are built into a replacement tailgate handle for your F-Series truck.

If you tow a trailer, you may want to ask about adding a camera system to the back of the trailer. These systems can be integrated into many of the new F-Series radio displays so you can see what’s behind you while driving and make maneuvering your trailer much easier and safer.

Super Duty Upgrades
NAV-TV from Florida offers a dedicated trailer camera kit designed specifically for Ford Super Duty vehicles. The kit helps to ensure that your installer can upgrade your truck safely and reliably.

Side Steps and Running Boards

Another popular upgrade for Ford vans and trucks are running boards. The coolest option on the market are the Amp Research PowerStep motorized boards. When parked or driving around town, the boards are tucked up tight to the rocker panels to maintain ground clearance and aerodynamics. As soon as you open a door, the board extends down so you can enter or exit the vehicle safely. If you have a lifted truck, the PowerStep XL adds an additional three inches of extension.

Super Duty Upgrades
The Amp Research PowerStep XL includes built-in LED lighting and works automatically when you open or close the doors of your Super Duty vehicle.

Headlight and Off-Road Light Upgrades

Headlights are one of the most important safety items on a vehicle. If you can’t see obstacles in front of you at night, the chances of an accident are likely. If your truck came with halogen bulbs, consider dropping by your local specialty automotive enhancement retailer and ask about an HID or LED light upgrade. These modern bulb technologies can triple the light output to let you see farther.

If you take your truck off-road, light bars and cube lights are a popular upgrade. Companies like Heise have a variety of Ford-specific solutions to light up a trail or sand dune.

Super Duty Upgrades
The Heise HE-DRC50 is a 50-inch curved LED light bar that is equipped with 96 three-watt CREE LEDs. Total light output is an astonishing 23,040 lumens.

Bed Covers Add Protection

If you store personal belongings or tools in the bed of your truck, you may want to consider adding a bed cover. A soft roll-up cover is a great way to hide the contents of the bed from prying eyes and keep things clean and dry. Upgrading to a hard-folding or roll-up cover provides additional security. There are even motorized roll-up covers that are controlled by a remote key fob. How’s that for convenience?

Tool and cargo boxes, bed organizers and liners and light upgrades are also popular upgrades to make your pickup truck more usable and convenient.

Super Duty Upgrades
The Bak Industries BakFlip MX4 is a folding hard bed cover that offers excellent protection for tools.

Popular Chevy and GMC Truck Upgrades

Chevy Truck Upgrades

When it comes to personalizing your Chevrolet or GMC truck, your local specialist mobile enhancement retailer offers a variety of stereo system, convenience and functionality upgrades to make your vehicle suit your needs and tastes. These upgrades can make your pickup truck more comfortable in hot or cold weather, allow you to store equipment safely or listen to your music as though you are front-row at your favorite concert. Let’s look at some of the options that are available.

Chevy and GMC Truck Audio System Upgrades

When it comes to listening to music in our vehicles, no vehicle manufacturer delivers a truly world-class listening experience. One of the best upgrades you can make is to add a dedicated subwoofer system. Even if you have a top-of-the-line Silverado High Country, a high-quality subwoofer will improve every aspect of the listening experience.

Chevy Truck Upgrades
MTI Acoustics has subwoofer enclosures designed specifically for late-model Chevrolet and GMC trucks. Their fit and finish is unmatched by any other “off the shelf” solution.

If you have a truck with limited smartphone connectivity, upgrading the radio with a new multimedia receiver that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can make your time behind the wheel safer and more productive. These integration solutions use the voice recognition system in your smartphone to allow you to make phone calls, send text messages, get navigation instructions or choose an entertainment option without having to look at the radio.

Safety and Parking System Upgrades

Another popular upgrade is to add a backup camera to your pickup truck. Without a camera, you risk damaging toys or lawn equipment or, most significantly, injuring children or adult pedestrians as you back into a parking spot or driveway. Backup cameras work automatically with an aftermarket radio, the factory-installed infotainment system or a new rearview mirror to show an image of everything behind the vehicle.

Blind spot camera systems are another popular upgrade. These systems add dedicated side-view cameras on either side of the vehicle to let you know if something or someone is beside the truck when you activate your turn signals.

Remote Starter System Adds Comfort Year-Round

While most of us in Canada and the northern US associate remote starters with cold winter mornings, they are equally convenient on a hot summer afternoon to let the air conditioning system cool the interior of your truck. Remote starters include a variety of options for remote controls, including compact one-way systems or two-way remotes with LED or LCD screens that let you know when the vehicle has started. You can even control your vehicle using your smartphone using a telematics solution like DroneMobile or SmartStart.

Chevy Truck Upgrades
You have full access to door lock control and remote start functions from anywhere you and your vehicle have cellular data access, thanks to telematics solutions like DroneMobile from Firstech.

Window Tint and Paint Protection Film

Many mobile enhancement retailers offer window tinting and paint protection film installation services. Window tint can not only change the appearance of your pickup truck, high-quality ceramic and carbon films can reject more than 60% of the heat energy from the sun to make your vehicle more comfortable on a hot summer day. All window tints block more than 95% of the UV rays from the sun to protect your skin from blemishes and wrinkles.

Chevy Truck Upgrades
Companies like 3M, Llumar and XPEL have window tint simulators on their websites to help you envision what your vehicle will look like once it’s tinted.

Paint protection film, also called clear bra, is an extremely durable transparent coating that is applied to high-wear and impact-prone surfaces on your truck. The front bumper, front grille, hood, headlights and mirror covers can take a beating from gravel, rocks, sand and salt. Films from companies like 3M, Suntek and XPEL are made from a thick (6-8 mil) urethane plastic that absorbs impacts and scuffs to keep your truck looking like new for years and years.

Side Steps and Running Boards

If you have a lifted truck or an HD model that has a lot of ground clearance, a set of running boards or side steps can make getting in and out much safer. Modern truck steps are designed to bolt to existing mounting locations under the cab and very few require modifications to the vehicle.

If you like the clean look of your truck but want a step solution, look into the AMP Research PowerStep motorized side steps. This step platform sits up tight against the rocker panel as you drive then folds down to make it easy to get in and out as soon as you open a door.

Chevy Truck Upgrades
AMP Research PowerSteps are the Cadillac of truck steps. They sit tight to the body as you drive, maintaining ground clearance and aerodynamics, then fold down for easy access when you open a door.

Toolboxes and Tonneau Covers

If you use your truck for work, adding a high-quality toolbox is a great way to increase storage options. Heavy-duty tool boxes from companies like CamLocker and Dee Zee fit perfectly between the bed rails and include weather seals to ensure that hand and power tools are kept safe and dry.

Chevy Truck Upgrades
Available in polished aluminum, gloss or matte black and a variety of camouflage options, CamLocker toolboxes deliver convenience and protection.

A tonneau cover is one of the most popular upgrades for pickup trucks. You can choose from hard or soft covers in a variety of rolling and folding designs to suit your needs. Hard tonneau covers offer the benefit of additional security to keep the contents of your truck bed safe.

Chevy Truck Upgrades
The Revolver X4 from BAK Industries is a rolling hard cover that uses aluminum slats and a patented locking rail system to keep your cargo safe and secure.

Upgrade Your Chevrolet or GMC Truck Today!

These are just a few of the options available to enhance your Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2500HD or 3500HD pickup truck. Off-Road Electrical Accessories

Off-Road Electrical AccessoriesAn afternoon of plowing through knee-high mud or bouncing off rocks in your favorite four-wheeler is a lot of fun! But proper preparation before embarking on your adventure will help to ensure that your day goes without issue. When it comes to preparation, a reliable electrical system and properly-installed accessories are as important as the mechanical systems on your truck. Read on to find out why your local mobile enhancement retailer is the perfect destination for the installation of your off-road electrical accessories.

Off-Road Lighting

Off-Road Electrical Accessories High-power lighting is synonymous with off-road adventure preparation. Nobody wants to be stuck in the woods after the sun sets and not be able to see. In years gone by, adding high-power lighting meant having a row of large round lights on your front bumper or roof rack. These incandescent lights consumed a significant amount of power. For example, a single KC Pro-Sport Halogen lights can consume 8.3 amps of current and produce 2452 lumens.

Modern lights use multiple LEDs to provide much more efficient, and arguably more durable solutions. Rigid Industries is one of the leaders in LED off-road lights. Their Dually XL lights feature 9 LEDs per light and will produce more than 2736 lumens each while consuming 4.6 Amps of current. Regarding efficiency, that is almost exactly twice as much light output per amp of current consumed.

Off-Road Electrical Accessories Lighting upgrades include light bars, small lights that can mount in your grill or bumper, rock lights, work lights, backup lights and more. Headlight upgrades to HID or LED solutions can make the drive to and from the trail safer as well. Lighting upgrades are popular on ATVs, side-by-sides and if your geography suits it, snowmobiles.

Lighting and Accessory System Control and Installation

When it comes to light installation, there are three important considerations: Mounting/aiming, wiring, and control. A reputable mobile enhancement retailer can provide a unique combination of installation creativity and durability. Custom mounting brackets, unique mounting locations and amazing integration options set their installations apart from conventional “bolt-on” solutions.

Mobile electronics technicians have unmatched experience when it comes to wiring. The path that the wiring for your lights takes is as important as how the lights are mounted and how they are controlled. Protecting wiring from damage starts with avoiding potential damage from moving parts, heat sources and sharp edges on metal brackets. Your wiring will also be concealed beautifully. Proper routing starts at the light by running the wiring into bumpers or roof racks, and where it runs through the vehicle. Cloth tape, braided wire loom, split loom tubing and heat shrink tubing are just some of the standard solutions used to conceal and protect the wiring. Zip ties or tesa tape will secure the wiring to ensure it will not fall out of place and be damaged.

Off-Road Electrical AccessoriesControlling your auxiliary lighting systems offers us another unique specialty of your local mobile electronics retailer. In days gone by, the ubiquitous chrome toggle switch mounted in the center console or on the panel under the steering column was par for the course. These days that would stand out like a paint run on a Bugatti! There are several options for lighting control. Perhaps one of the most preferred solutions is to purchase an OEM switch that fits into a blank in your dash and repurpose it for the new lights. A close second option are aftermarket switches that look like factory switches. Some of these have unusual and unique labeling to help describe the function of the light. Rock Lights, work lights, light bar and the ever-important Zombie lights are just some of the options. Your installer can integrate one or more of these lights into an existing control panel, or fabricate a new panel for all of your accessories.

Many people overlook the importance of how electrical connections are made. There are several options available when it comes to making an electrical connection. We could spend an entire article discussing the benefits and drawbacks of different wire connections methods. We will simplify by stating that soldered connections, protected with premium vinyl electrical tape or heat shrink tubing will offer excellent electrical performance and exceptional reliability.

Off-Road Winches

Off-Road Electrical AccessoriesIf lighting is the number one accessory for off-roaders, then a winch has to be a very close second. Heading out on a challenging trail without a winch is a risky decision. Even a small winch can help you get out of a (literally) sticky situation. When it comes to winches, Warn Industries is the most recognized brand name in the industry. They manufacture winches for trucks and ATVs, as well as heavy duty solutions for tow trucks and compact winches for motorcycles. Winches are powered by an electric motor. To do work, these motors require large amounts of current. The compact Warn XT17 portable motorcycle winch can draw as much as 65 amps when pulling 1700 lbs, and a popular winch like the 10,000 lb Warn Zeon 10-S can consume 409 amps at full load. How your winch is connected to your vehicle electrical system will not impact its performance, but also the reliability.

Just as with a high-power amplifier, feeding your winch requires large-gauge wiring to supply power efficiently. The cable size depends on the size and subsequent current requirements of the winch, and the distance the winch is located from the battery and alternator. For a large winch, you should look at upgrading the electrical connections between the alternator and both the battery and chassis of the vehicle. Your installer can help make recommendations to ensure the system will function reliably.

High-Performance Air Compressors

Another popular off-road accessory is an air compressor. Many off-road enthusiasts will let some air out of their tires to increase the contact patch as they venture off the pavement. Once the day on the trails is done, having a quality air compressor available to pump them back up for the drive home will make your trip safer and more efficient. Air compressors can also be used to activate Air Locker differentials to increase traction or inflate air suspension components to change ride height.

Off-Road Electrical AccessoriesCompanies like ARB offer a full line of air compressors. From a compact unit like the CKSA12 that can flow just under 1 cfm and produce 100 psi of pressure to a monster like the CKMTA12 that will provide more than 6cfm and 150 psi, all of these compressors need current to perform. Big compressors can draw as much as 50 amps of current– similar to what a 500-watt amplifier can consumer. Again, proper wire size selection and reliable connections not only ensure reliability but can increase performance.

Charging System Upgrades

If you are running a big winch, lots of lighting, and have a truck full of all the latest technology…then your electrical system may have a hard time keeping up with the power demands. Your mobile enhancement retailer can help in two ways. A high-current alternator can easily double the amount of charging current available as compared to the factory unit. Many aftermarket alternators provide 280-300 amps of current, and some feature adjustable voltage regulators to fine-tune power delivery.

Off-Road Electrical AccessoriesUpgrading your battery is an excellent way to improve the reliability of your electrical system. A high-performance battery in a stock size can provide a little more capacity. AGM-style batteries can handle the shock and vibration that off-roading induces better than conventional flooded batteries. Your retailer may be able to fit an oversized battery in your vehicle with some simple fabrication.

If you are headed deep into the woods to camp, then an auxiliary battery system may be worth investigation. Having a battery dedicated to starting your engine, and a second battery dedicated to your accessories adds safety and security. The batteries are charged by your truck’s alternator but operate independently. If you kill the accessory battery, the starter battery is ready to get your vehicle running and get things charged back up.

Convenience Accessories

The list of convenience accessories you can add to your off-road is nearly endless. A high-power two-way radio can help you stay in touch with friends, or call for a little help if you get REALLY stuck! A power inverter will let you run 120 VAC accessories like a laptop or small power tools to make repairs. Additional cigarette lighter style plugs or dedicated USB ports can be added to make charging portable devices easier. We once heard of someone installing a snow-making machine in a vehicle. With that said, anything is possible.

When it comes time to outfit your off-road vehicle with equipment to make your adventure safer or more entertaining, drop by your local mobile electronics retailer. They can help you choose the right accessories for your application. Even if the shop does not sell the product you want, talk to them about doing the installation for you. The performance and reliability of your electrical components will thank you for it!
