Product Spotlight: Audison Bit One HD Virtuoso

Bit One HD Virtuoso

Long considered one of the forerunners in digital signal processing in the car audio industry, Audison continues their performance and technological evolution with the introduction of the new Bit One HD Virtuoso. This advanced processor builds on the success of the Bit One HD and includes upgraded premium audio components for improved sound quality, along with state-of-the-art signal routing and processing capabilities to cope with even the most-advanced and challenging of factory-installed source units and amplifiers.

Virtuoso Digital Signal Processor Basic Features

Bit One HD VirtuosoThe new Virtuoso digital signal processor (DSP) includes six RCA inputs, 12 high-level inputs, a pair of RCA auxiliary inputs and two TOSLINK optical inputs. The high-level inputs are equipped with Audison’s Universal Speaker Simulator (USS), so factory-installed source units that use load-sensing to check for speakers will function normally.

The digital inputs will accept standard stereo audio data streams up to 24-bit depth and 96kHz sampling rates. There are 13 RCA preamp outputs, each rated to produce up to 4 volts of signal. Two sets of AD Link/AC Link connections are available to feed digital signals to Audison amplifiers like the Voce Series when equipped with the AV Bit IN HD digital input board. Using the AD Link/AC Link system eliminates the chance of picking up noise between a processor and an amplifier using analog connections.

Remote Volume Auxiliary Input

An interesting and unique feature of the Virtuoso is the Remote Volume Aux (RVA) feature, which lets you use the volume control on your source unit to control the output level of the processor when using its auxiliary input. The function can be enabled using a test tone stored on a USB memory stick or by connecting the RVA output to the aux input on the head unit. The Virtuoso monitors the level of the test tone and adjusts the output of the processor to match. This configuration maintains an appropriate level for Bluetooth, navigation prompts and warning chimes.

Premium Components for Superb Sound

Bit One HD VirtuosoAudison has included a variety of audiophile-grade components in the new Virtuoso processor. First, the output operational amplifiers are Texas Instruments OPAx134 SoundPlus units. These devices have a stunning 0.00008% distortion spec and add almost no noise to the signal. SILMIC series ELNA filter capacitors filter the power fed to the output op-amps to reduce the chances of noise. Finally, high-performance metalized polypropylene film capacitors in the audio path provide excellent high-frequency performance.

A pair of Cirrus Logic Advanced Multi-bit Delta Sigma Architecture 24-bit digital-to-analog converters handles conversion of data from the Analog Device ADSP-21489 SHARC Processor. This powerful processor was chosen for its ability to handle the complex math involved in implementing Finite Impulse Response (FIR) crossovers and equalization on many of the output channels. Audison suggests that the use of FIR filters over Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) processing eliminates phase anomalies associated with configuring and tuning the system to produce a more-coherent soundstage and improved listening experience.

Next-Level Factory Sound System Integration

Bit One HD VirtuosoThe Bit One HD Virtuoso is equipped with advanced DE-EQ processing that includes phase analysis. Previous integration processing has been able to undo equalization and signal delay added to the output of an amplifier. The Virtuoso adds the ability to detect all-pass (Phase EQ) processing and apply a correction to produce a time-coherent signal for your installer to work with. The Virtuoso will also detect reverse-polarity speaker wire connections so the installer can swap the wiring and reduce processing requirements.

If your factory audio system doesn’t include an upmixer, the Virtuoso will work in the Automatic Routing Input Setup mode. This configuration sums and corrects EQ and Phase to produce a wide-bandwidth signal. The pass-through mode is best used with factory sound systems that include an upmixer and discrete center channel. No summing is applied in pass-through mode, and inputs are routed through to the outputs with provisions for equalization and filtering, depending on the requirements of the new speakers.

Experience the Audison Bit One HD Virtuoso for Yourself!

If you are shopping for an audio system upgrade for your vehicle, visit your local authorized Audison dealer and ask about adding the new Bit One HD Virtuoso to your system design. Beyond being an extremely capable integration processor, it will allow your installer to configure and calibrate each speaker in your mobile audio system so your listening experience can rival or exceed the detail and accuracy of the most-bespoke of home audio systems.

Product Spotlight: Audison AP2

Audison AP2If you have a Ford, Toyota or General Motors vehicle with a midrange speaker location in the outer corners of the dash, you may want to consider the Audison AP2 Wide-Range Component speakers for your sound system upgrade. These Prima-Series 2-inch transducers were designed to cover the midrange and high-frequency audio spectrum without the need for a tweeter. Let’s look at the features of these compact speakers and why they are a great option for your car or truck.

Design Features of the Audison AP2 Wide-Range Speaker

Each AP2 is built around a stamped steel frame with large vents in the sides and four mounting tabs in the corners. At the base of the cone is a custom aluminum T-yoke that supports a pair of neodymium magnet slugs that are separated by a spacer. The top magnet features a thin copper shorting ring to help control stray magnetic fields and reduce inductance. This ring helps extend high-frequency response to 20 kHz and reduce distortion and higher excursion levels.

Audison AP2The driver uses an aluminum cone and dust cap attached to the frame with a rubber surround. A flat, linear spider is attached to the voice coil former to keep everything centered in the magnetic gap. The voice coil winding has a diameter of 1 inch and features a dual-layer CCAW winding with a nominal impedance of 4 ohms.

The former is made of Kapton and features a series of cooling and pressure relief vents that contribute to the speaker’s ability to handle 25-watt continuous, 50-watt peak power levels. While these numbers may seem low, they are real specifications and represent actual power measurements rather than specifications created using pink noise. Comparable pink-noise ratings would be north of 75 watts.

In terms of dimensions, the AP2 has a mounting depth of 1.46 inches, and it requires a 2.01-inch mounting cut-out. The outer diameter of the mounting tabs is 2.74 inches.

Specifications and Applications

The Audison AP2 has a resonant frequency of 145 Hz, which is nice and low for a driver of this small size. The Vas equivalent air volume specification is 0.36 liter, and the total Q (Qts) is 0.64. Computer simulations show that this driver will work in extremely small enclosures (0.02 cubic foot), making it ideal for A-pillar pod applications. Excursion-based power handling reaches the 2.5 mm (0.098-inch) Xmax value at 175 Hz, so a steep high-pass filter crossover at this frequency (or perhaps 200 Hz) will ensure that the driver sounds excellent at higher volume levels.

There is a lot of misunderstanding in the mobile electronics industry around how wide-range or wideband drivers work at higher frequencies. The output of any speaker (of any size or shape) becomes increasingly directional at higher frequencies. As you can see from the graph below, the output of the AP2 drops by about 10 decibels around 12-14 kHz as the listener movies off-axis to the cone. Called directivity, this phenomenon is based on the diameter of the cone. As such, installations of the AP2 where it’s used without a tweeter should place the speaker directly on-axis with the listener or in the corners of a dash where the high-frequency information can reflect off the nearby windshield and be dispersed into the listening environment. If your installer wants to add a tweeter like the Audison AP1, this driver would be exceptional in a door location, as is found in many BMW vehicles.

Product Spotlight: Audison Ford F-150 Sound Packs

Audison F-150

Great news for Ford F-150 truck owners! Audison has been hard at work developing its Sound Pack audio system upgrades for 2011 and newer Ford pickups. Based on the same philosophy as the BMW and Mini systems, 2011 and newer vehicles with XL, XLT, Lariat and Raptor trim levels can be upgraded with new speakers, a subwoofer and a custom-tuned five- or eight-channel amplifier with integrated digital signal processing.

Choose Your Performance Level

Audison F-150One of the many benefits of these Sound Pack upgrade solutions is the Online Configurator that helps you and the mobile enhancement retailer you’ve chosen to install the system pick the right components and performance level for your truck’s specific model year and trim level. The upgrades use the Prima-Series APK 690 6×9-inch or APK 570 5×7-inch component speaker system for the front doors and the matching APX 6.5 coaxial speaker for the rear doors with dedicated mounting brackets to ensure the installation performs reliably and sounds great.

Audison F-150The Level 8 systems use the five-channel AP5.9 bit amplifier to power the front and rear speakers along with a subwoofer. Stepping up to the Level 10 systems swaps in the eight-channel AP8.9 bit amplifier to bi-amp the front component set for a more accurate soundstage. Level 10 systems use the powered APBX 10 AS subwoofer with the processed subwoofer output on the amplifier to deliver solid bass performance and impressive dynamics.

Ford-specific Audio System Tuning

Audion F-150Audison sent one of its top engineers to North America to help design and tune these upgrade packages. After weeks of complex acoustic measurements and detailed listening evaluations, Audison created a set of vehicle-specific digital signal processor (DSP) configurations for each Prima plug-and-play upgrade package.

Each configuration is specific to an upgrade package and the trim level of Ford truck in question. Settings for crossovers, output levels, equalization and signal routing have been completed on your behalf to make the integration process efficient and get you back on the road in a matter of hours with amazing sound.

Integrated System Control

Audison F-150Thanks to a partnership with iDatalink, each of these vehicle-specific solutions includes a Maestro AR amplifier replacement interface and a vehicle-specific wiring harness. Using this interface allows volume control and tone adjustment commands from the factory source unit to be sent directly to the DSP in the amplifier to control the system. Your new Audison amp will function just like the factory amp, but with improved clarity and detail.

Audison has truly thought of everything, even including speaker cable adapters so that your installer doesn’t have to cut any wires in the vehicle to complete the installation. Speaker mounting adapters are also included to expedite the installation process.

What Makes Prima Plug-and-Play Systems Amazing

Audison F-150Tuning the speakers in your audio system for the environment they are installed in is what separates a simple stereo component installation from a true audio system upgrade. Without proper equalization, signal delay and level settings, all you get is sound from each speaker. When set up by an expert, your music will come from a virtual soundstage that spans the width of the vehicle and delivers accurate placement of instruments and performers across that stage. One of the key features of the Prima Sound Packs is that the tuning work has been done for you. Your installer can download the DSP configuration and upload it to the bit-series amplifier. You even have your choice of a driver-focused tune or one that sounds good from both seats.

Upgrade Your Ford F-150 with Audison Prima

If you are tired of boring sound from the stereo in your Ford F-150, drop by your local authorized Audison retailer and ask about the new plug-and-play Sound Packs. The difference in detail, accuracy and realism will blow your mind!

Product Spotlight: Audison Prima Subwoofers

Audison Prima SubwoofersThe Prima series of amplifiers and speakers from Audison is highly regarded for its installation flexibility and impressive performance. The most recent additions to the Prima line are three new component subwoofers and five loaded subwoofer enclosures. Like the Prima amps and speakers, the new Audison Prima subwoofers are designed as a perfect upgrade to any factory-installed audio system.

Prima Shallow-Mount Subwoofers

Audison Prima SubwoofersThe new Prima subwoofers include two eight-inch models and a 10-inch. The APS 8 D and APS 10 D feature dual four-ohm voice coils with suspension designs optimized for compact sealed enclosures. The APS 8 R subwoofer has a single four-ohm voice coil and is intended for use in a bass-reflex (vented) enclosure.

All three subwoofers are optimized to provide excellent output. The shape of the woofer cone is angled to clear the spider mounting ledge to increase excursion capabilities. The APS 8 R and APS 8 D are specified as having an Xmax (one-way cone travel limit) of 8.8 mm and the APS 10 D can move 11 mm in each direction.

The APS subs feature a vented pole piece that allows hot air to escape from the inside of the motor structure and peripheral vents underneath the spider mounting plateau to keep the outside cool. This second row of vents allows reliable operation when sub is mounted near the back wall of an enclosure.

Audison Prima SubwoofersThe APS 10 D has a mounting depth of 3.46 inches and stands out 1.23 inches from the mounting surface. The driver is optimized to function well in enclosures with a volume as small as 10 liters (0.35 cubic feet). The APS 8 R and APS 8 D subwoofers have a mounting depth of 3.11 inches and extend forward 0.98 inches. The APS 8 D will work in 7.5-liter (0.26 cubic-foot) enclosures while the APS 8 R needs a mere 8.5-liter (0.30 cubic-foot) vented design. The larger vented enclosure will provide roughly 4 dB more output around 50 Hz for a given input signal.

Loaded Subwoofer Enclosures

Audison Prima SubwoofersEach of the new subwoofers is available loaded in a custom-tailored enclosure. The enclosures are constructed from medium-density fiberboard and include internal bracing for excellent rigidity. Rounded corners give the enclosures a bespoke look that blends nicely with modern vehicle interiors.

Your installer can mount the enclosure with the sub facing upward into the listening area for excellent upper bass impact or use the provided mounting feet to fire the sub down into the floor to enhance low-frequency output. Audison calls this design 2 Sides 2 Sounds or 2S2 for short. The optional mounting feet include hook-and-loop fasteners to help keep the enclosure in place.

The terminal cup on the side of each enclosure includes a connector that makes the system instantly compatible with Audison Prima Plug & Play connectors. Of course, high-quality spring-loaded terminals are also included so the enclosures can be used with any amplification solution.

Prima Active Subwoofer Enclosures

Audison Prima SubwoofersAudison has also introduced eight- and 10-inch sealed enclosures with built-in amplifiers. The unique Class D amplifiers feature a design called he·li or High Efficiency-Low Impedance. The drivers used in the powered enclosures have the same mechanical design as their APS 8 D and APS 10 D brethren but use low impedance voice coils. This design allows the amplifiers to work directly with the voltage supplied by the vehicle electrical system and negates the need for, and efficiency losses associated with, a switching power supply. The result is 250 watts for the APBX 8 AS and an impressive 400 watts for the APBX 10 AS enclosures.

Audison Prima SubwoofersBoth amplified subwoofer enclosure solutions include electronic variable crossovers, adjustable phase and a bass boost circuit. The amplifiers will accept speaker-level inputs or a preamp signal and include automatic turn-on circuitry for use when connected to a factory-installed audio system. Electrical connections are on a quick-connect plug that allows the enclosure to be removed easily. Both enclosures include an HRC AP remote level control to allow you to adjust the bass level from the front seat.

Enclosure Dimensions:

APBX 8 R 18.62” 13.15” 5.16”
APBX 8 DS 14.84” 13.15” 5.16”
APBX 8 AS 15.2” 11.73 6.22”
APBX 10 DS 18.58” 13.15” 5.59”
APBX 10 AS 18.11” 13.31” 6.22”

Adding a subwoofer is the best and easiest way to improve the performance of your stereo. Audison’s new Prima subwoofers provide you the option of a drop-in solution or give your installer the opportunity to create something unique for your vehicle. Visit your local authorized Audison retailer to experience the new Prima subwoofers for yourself.
